my heel has been hurting since last week....not when i walk, only when i run ( i think the pitch was too hard for my shoes last couple of times i played). but anyway, how long does it take for this to heal? its been a week and im so wanting to play this weekend. is there anything i can do to speed up the healing? stretching?

Re: achilles....
of course you can try
R - rest
I - ice
C - compression
E - elevation (above heart level)
you can still play but do a good long warm-up jog, followed by lots of stretching and try a sports creme like FLEXALL
taking some motrin before and after will help the inflamation
good luck and be careful - a torn achilles is a nasty injury but if you are careful with this and treat it right you should be ok

any idea what caused this? was it the shoes (darn nikes....got new pulse a3's yesterday, which i hope will help), the field (awfully hard dirt), lack of conditioning?

Re: achilles....
could be a number of reasons......if your boots are new, they could have been rubbing. You might have over strained the achilles tendon and not realised, the ground might have been to hard and caused a strain, you might not have warmed up enough and caused yourself an injury or you could have picked up a knock or the boots might not be the right 1's for you.

Re: achilles....
I used to have the same problem that you're having. I got kicked one time in the heel, and it has never been the same since. I couldn't play for a month, but when I did, one thing I noticed was that Nike shoes made my heel hurt. I wear Asics running shoes and Adidas cleats now, which helps, but the biggest thing you can do for yourself is get some arch supports. Not expensive kinds, just the $5-10 pair from WalMart that are made for athletics. Also, the firmer the arch support, the better. The supports should just slip in and out of the heel of your shoe. Mine are probably 4 inches long, but they help me to no end.
