Tribal Football is reporting that MLS has bought out Danny Califf's contract at Midtjylland and that he will join the Union. http://www.tribalfootball.com/midtjylland’s-califf-set-join-philadelphia-union-484141
Something will be going Houston's way as well (likely just allocation money), as they still hold is MLS rights from when they were San Jose. Crazy...
Emilio heading back to Honduras? Goff also mentioned this possible move http://www.tribalfootball.com/dc-united’s-emilio-linked-former-club-olimpia-484121
How long do they hold his rights? he left after the 05 season. If went on a free they should get nothing. If they got money for him, then they lose his rights. Not sure how after almost 4 years houston would get something for him
But we drafted him in 2004. I'm guessing there can't be a statute of limitation more than five years.
I've never heard of a team holding a players rights for more then 2 years, whether he played with them (and left on a free transfer or not) or was drafted by them. It seems strange that Houston would be getting compensation for a player that has been gone longer then any MLS contract.
I think that he's (nominally) a "returning USA international", which may have something to do with it.
From what I recall, he would be picked based on allocation order (which Philly holds) but no compensation for the team he last played for in MLS.
(L) RETURNING U.S. NATIONAL TEAM POOL PLAYERS In the event a U.S. National Team pool player playing abroad returns to the U.S. and there is interest from multiple MLS teams, preference will be given first to a team prepared to use an allocation. If there is more than one team prepared to use an allocation on a particular player, the current season's allocation rankings as determined by the MLS Competition Committee would be used. In the event no team is willing to use an allocation, the player will be assigned via waivers.
Yeah, I need to learn to trust my memory less. So the SJ/Houston angle is puzzling, to say the least.
It's official, Philly has signed Danny Califf after trading allocation money to Houston for his rights. http://philadelphiaunion.com/Content1.aspx?cid=2.1
We missed this part: OUT OF CONTRACT PLAYERS / OPTIONS NOT PICKED UP: a team retains the right of first refusal to the player indefinitely only if attempts were made to re-sign the player. This is why we no longer have rights to Jeremiah White: DRAFTED BUT NOT SIGNED: a player who was drafted by a particular team through the SuperDraft and did not sign, is placed on that team's "College Protected List" until the second December 31 immediately following the draft in question, after which the team loses the rights to sign the player. So we still have Tyrel Lacey for one more year.
True, but the "indefinitely" part explains why Houston was able to get compensation for Califf. There is also a part about allocations received as comp, which explains, for example, why SJE got nothing when LD went to LAG. SJE got an allocation when he left, so they no longer retained his rights. Like Doc said, a lot of little "yeah, but"s.
