The AFC seems to have a good idea in bringing together 17 emerging nations for the first edition of the AFC Challenge Cup in 2006.

They have divided their 45 member nations into 3 groups.
The top 14 are classed as developed associations.
    Bahrain
    China
    Indonesia
    Iran
    Iraq
    Japan
    Kuwait
    Qatar
    Saudi Arabia
    South Korea
    Thailand
    United Arab Emirates
    Uzbekistan
    Vietnam

The next 14 are classed as developing associations.
    Bangladesh
    Hong Kong
    India
    Jordan
    Lebanon
    Malaysia
    Maldives
    Myanmar
    North Korea
    Oman
    Singapore
    Syria
    Turkmenistan
    Yemen

The last 17 are classed as emerging associations, who need time to develop their football. These are the teams who will participate in this new competition.

The nations that have been selected to compete in the AFC Challenge Cup are
    Afghanistan
    Bhutan
    Brunei
    Cambodia
    East Timor
    Guam
    Kyrgyzstan
    Laos
    Macao
    Mongolia
    Nepal
    Pakistan
    Palestine
    Philippines
    Sri Lanka
    Taiwan
    Tajikistan

I reckon that Tajikistan will prove too strong for the rest of the competition, and will face either Palestine or Kyrgyzstan in the final.

You have a link for this, I presume?

I like the idea of helping the "emerging associations" find their feet, so to speak. How do they plan on getting some of the poorer FAs around to matches, though? Will they use some of the oil money ... erm, AFC member dues, to offset travel costs?

I found the information at http://www.footballasia.com. If you look under the Bhutan section (in the associations menu), you will see a link to the story. The challenge cup is for national teams, but they will also have a tournament for the club teams of these 17 nations in 2005. I am not sure of the format of the tournament, but I guess that it probably will not be home and away due to travel costs.

AFC have told that the Challenge Cup will be from March 25 to April 6.

"The competition, which is to begin in 2006, will feature the national teams of 17 countries and will be held on a biannual basis in a single country, with all expenses to be borne by the AFC."

No news about what country that will host this tournament?

The draw has been made for the tournament for developing nations in Asia.

The tournament will be co-hosted by Nepal and Bangladesh.

Groups A & B will be held in Nepal, with the other 2 groups playing in Bangladesh.

The tournament will run from 25th March - 9th April 2006.

    GROUP A
    Afghanistan
    India
    Philippines
    Taiwan

    GROUP B
    Bhutan
    Brunei
    Nepal
    Sri Lanka

    GROUP C
    Bangladesh
    Cambodia
    Guam
    Palestine

    GROUP D
    Kyrgyzstan
    Macao
    Pakistan
    Tajikistan

AFC is considering moving the matches in Nepal to Bangladesh. The reason is the political unstability in Nepal. Dhaka and Chittagong in Bangladesh will then be hosting all matches in AFC Challenge Cup. AFC have also considered other candidates , but have to make a final decision very soon , maybe next week.

Bangladesh to be sole host of inaugural AFC Challenge Cup 2006
    21 February 2006

KUALA LUMPUR: During the meeting of the AFC Challenge Cup and AFC President’s Cup Organising Committee earlier today at AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, it was decided that Bangladesh would be the sole host of the inaugural edition of the AFC Challenge Cup, due to the current unrest in Nepal.

The dates of the competition were also amended from 25th March to 7th April 2006, to Saturday 1st April to Sunday 16th April 2006, in order not to clash with the Independence Day activities on 26th March 2006 in Bangladesh.

The AFC Challenge Cup, which provides an international competition platform for sixteen teams from the emerging and developing countries, will be played in two venues, Dhaka and Chittagong.

Detailed competition information will be available at the AFC Challenge Cup mini-site hosted on www.the-afc.com from Friday 24th March 2006.

KUALA LUMPUR: Bangladesh have been slotted against Cambodia in what will be a tricky opener for the hosts at the Bangabandhu Stadium in Dhaka even as SAFF champions India take on Afghanistan at the MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong on the first day of the inaugural AFC Challenge Cup on April 1.

The other teams in action on the opening day are Chinese Taipei who play the Philippines and Palestine who should be favourites against Guam.

Sixteen teams from the AFC’s ‘emerging countries’ are vying for the honours in this tournament which is the only one other than the blue riband AFC Asian Cup bringing together so many countries on the same platform.

The teams have been split into four groups with India, Chinese Taipei, the Philippines and Afghanistan in Group A and Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and Brunei in Group B. Both these groups will play their matches at the MA Aziz Stadium in the picturesque port city of Chittagong.

Group C comprises hosts Bangladesh, Palestine, Cambodia and Guam while Group D has Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan and Macau. The last two groups play their matches at the Bangabandhu Stadium in the bustling capital city of Dhaka.

Two matches will be played at both the venues every day from April 1-6 in the group campaign with the first match kicking off at 1530 hours local time and the second match at 1800 hours.

In the quarterfinals, the winners of Group C will play the runners-up from Group D at the Bangabandhu Stadium on April 8 while the Group B toppers clash with the Group A runners-up in Chittagong the same day.

On April 9, the Group A winners play the Group B runners-up in Chittagong while the Group D toppers clash with the runners-up of Group C in Dhaka for a place in the last four. The quarterfinals will take place at 1700 hours local time.

The 1st semifinal will be played on April 12 (Wednesday) at the MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong and the 2nd semifinal on April 13 (Thursday) at the Bangabandhu Stadium in Dhaka. Both the matches are scheduled for 1700 hours local time.

The final takes place on April 16 (Sunday) at the Bangabandhu Stadium at 1700 hours.

All the matches will be telecast live on Bangladesh TV.

(The complete fixtures list will be available soon on the AFC Challenge Cup minisite on www.the-afc.com.)

India is taking an U-20 team mainly, and a team with some players from the senior side, who werent given a chance in the qualifiers.

Palestine is lightyears ahead of everyone in the draw... It'll be nice to win a trophy and be recognized as a solid side in Asia. Remember the 8-0 thrashing of Taiwan in WCQ? Plus we have recorded decent results against the best in Asia. Couple of years back we played Iran in a West Asia tournament and tied them 2-2... Iran needed a last second goal to grab a point in that match... and they were using a pretty strong squad.

I dont think it will be that easy for Palestine to win this tournament  You got Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan who can challenge you . Last match for Kyrgyzstan was a win against Syria away in World Cup qualifier . Tajikistan only lost 2-0 away to Qatar in February . Maybe host Bangladesh and Pakistan also can compete... India could have been a challenge but they are not fielding their best team.

Complete schedule is ready now :

They are not playing in the Challenge Cup. Maybe not regarded as "emerging" countries, they have been playing well and quite high ranked as number 117 in FIFA ranking.

Turkmenistan played two friendly matches last year, losing 1-0 to Saudi Arabia and 5-0 to Bahrain. Both away.

Not many matches this year for the Asian countries who are not in the qualifiers of the Asian Cup 2007 or in the Challenge Cup. Only chance is to compete in the ASIAN Games in Qatar in December.
