Just wondering what is the status of their contracts? If we decide to dump them are they still on the books? I think DC needs to look for fresh blood because neither of them played that great in 09'. :(

Fred had injury issues, but I think they did decent job.
Nontherless we probably need total restructuring of the team with a new coach.

    For what it's worth:

Austrailia: Fred rejects Wellington to stay in MLS with DC United
    http://www.tribalfootball.com/fred-rejects-wellington-stay-mls-dc-united-421841
"Brazilian playmaker Fred has rejected claims he was close to signing with Wellington Phoenix. Fred is still contracted to American powerhouse DC United for another season but the main reason he will remain is to gain his green card visa for the United States."
I hope for his sake Fred has a green card back up plan that doesn't include DCU.

    Some other issues for Fred:

    1. The tragic death of his father in the offseason.

    2. The health issues and surgeries of his infant/toddler daughter in April.

Those are some tough hurdles to get over in life.

I am sure those were major factors in his poor play in 2009.

What were the major factors in his poor play in 2008?

(now, if there was some way to reliably bring back the play, and the promise/seeming upside of Fred in 2007 . . .)

toward the end of the year (the part of the season where I remember his play actually being poor), I thought it might have been due to a rogue outside defender who kept leaving his area to go play offense leaving Fred to have to cover the area way too often.

I am willing to keep Fred if the powers that be feel his drop this year was mainly due to his off-field issues - and if they think they can do something to protect his seemingly very tender groin area, he seems to pull it alot (well, don't we all from time to time, but that's for a different thread).
I would like to do it on a renegotiated contract - change his one year high price to a two-year lower price with incentives for assists and goals perhaps.
Unless we can trade him straight up for Brad Davis :)

I'm guessing that would be Stephen de Roux. Were they paired *that* often? Anyway, I thought he had a rough year all year in 2008; but so did almost everyone on the team.

Actually, I'd prefer it not be for *any* thread, thanks anyway.

I thought he meant Martinez. Deroux wasn't important enough to be a factor

Oof, you're absolutely right. I fixated on "defender leaving area to go play offense" without really thinking about what was being said.

Yes. I has been a hard year for Fred off the field... But I still think DC can leave him open in the expansion draft and get a better winger.

I wonder if that means he's been given indications that he is in the team's plans for 2010.

Can we blame Tommy for that? It seems to be the in thing to do right now.

I don't know enough about MLS contracts. Are there contracts with incentives? If so, I agree with you. They should renegotiate lower salary + incentive contracts for both Fred and Emilio, unless better players (willing to play in MLS) are found. Incentives should also include winning- getting to playoffs, MLS cup win, open cup win, etc.

none of the off field problems explains Fred's complete lack of touch, poor pace and generally poor understanding of where to be on the field

Apparently, you never saw Naldo play for LA or Thiago Martins for NY, CUSA, and us.
