I have a crap coach that I have had from the start

I was thinking about promoting one of my old players (33) to coach
he has passable experience and solid leadership abilities,

Anhyone used an existing player as a coach before? is it worth it or not?

With that kind of leadership, it's definitely a cost savings to convert him. If there's any chance of running him up to solid experience and then turn him into a solid coach, that would be even better.

I believe the rule of thumb is that for weak leadership or better, it's cheaper to convert a player to a coach than hire externally, not counting the cost of acquiring the player in the first place.

How do you get up his experience? just by playing him in games? or does it take a few seasons cause my current coach is killing my team.

Play him in games and yes it will take a few seasons. I will have played a full season in 5 weeks. I have had two players pop in experience in that time. And since experience is probably the most random part of Hattrick, it is tough to say. Buy the best coach/leadership you can afford. I would focus on his coaching skill as opposed to leadership in the beginning. The money you make in training will easily fund your new high leadership coach. Or convert your own.

Yup, play him in every game you can afford to. In fact, I'd play him totally outta position in friendlies if it would guarantee that he had the worst star rating on the field and thus get mentioned in the game report.

Experience bumps 'seem' random. He may never go up for you. But each time a player gets mentioned in a game report, he gets a definite bump of some arbitrary, minute amount. Otherwise, I think players playing in a game have a certain probability of getting a minute experience bump.

US Cup games offer us the most bump (National teamers are the best but I assume none of us have one of those), followed by league games, international friendlies, and domestic friendlies. If you can wait, then go buy an inadequate or passable coach to improve your training while you wait. If not, go for it with your current guy. Best of luck!

An important note... as I understand it, merely getting mentioned in the game report isn't enough to get guaranteed experience. A player must get a card, injury, or goal -- something that requires the player record be updated. This seems to be a misconception arising out of poorly chosen words, either in the original HT post, or the translation and/or transcription.

(And, lest the less experienced managers here be confused, players who are "mentioned in the match report" do not get more experience, they get more predictable experience. In a league match, a player with such a mention will get one point of experience. A player without such a mention has a one in x chance of getting x points of experience. It evens out in aggregate.)

Thanks for that explanation Craig. I finally understand experience a lot more now.

As for advice to tas05, I assume you are out of the cup already. That means you should be scheduling international friendlies every single week. Not domestic friendlies.

Play your potential coach both Sunday (in league games) and Wednesday in a non-trainable position so you don't sacrifice your training of other players.

If you do that and I assume you have been playing him anyway this season, he should pop by the beginning of next season.
