    On this date.....

    • 1998 - DC United's Roy Lassiter sees his MLS-record-tying point streak stopped at 11 games when he fails to register a goal or an assist in a 3-1 loss to the Colorado Rapids.
    • 1998 - The US finishes dead last at the FIFA World Cup with a 1-0 loss to Yugoslavia in Nantes, France.

Don't know if it was mentioned earlier, but this story has a link to a video of Freddy's goal if you click on the little camera by the title.

"Under the stadium lease with First & Goal, those funds are targeted for long-term major maintenance and facility modernization."

Facility modernization? They just built the damn thing. Jesus.

There might be more to this story than meets the eye. Guy by the name of Anschutz controls Qwest and I'm sure he approved the deal. Could this somehow be connected to the Sounders enetering MLS?

Actually, that was the World Cup FINALS - the US finished better than a good 100 other nations in that World Cup...

    From Grant Whal's SI.com column:

My cable company cut to the next scheduled event on my PPV channel right b4 England's final penalty kick, so I called up and got my 20 bucks back. So at least I didn't pay to see them lose :)

    WARNING!

    1) Clip starts with a brief commercial which carries the MA "Mime Alert" rating

    2) Poofy-headed News Readers begin the story with a large "MUCH ADU ABOUT FREDDY" graphic. They both show us enough capped teeth to let us know that they are chuckling over this quite clever title.

    Let the viewer beware.

Wow! The Galaxy just got a WHOLE lot more profitable! This shows VErgara's belief that his team will succeed, too. If he's willing to start out down $25 million, he must be very confident.

That's a fair statement. $25mil isn't an easy investment to walk away from is it?

I'm waiting for someone to decry the unjustness of Vergara getting a team/LA getting another team just because they ponied up, while "deserving" cities like Portland sit and wait.

The question is whether he will pay yearly rent now. If not, then over time it's still a good deal but not that spectactular.

Vergara knows he'll have fans in LA and the chance to recoup his investment.
All he could do in Portland is lose his shirt. Why hasn't anyone in Portland "ponied" up? Or some billionair from Hong Kong?

How many EPL teams call London home?

That's kinda what I was saying.

There's no such thing as a city that "deserves" anything in sports.

That's my mom's most favorite piece.

You wouldn't be here if it wasn't.
