Default What happened to the US Cup?

I used to enjoy watching this tournament back in the '90s. Sure, the visiting teams never took it completely seriously, but it was a great event and a good chance for the US to get match practice against some international sides.

Is it worth bringing back? Probably not in the original format given the crowded international calendar. But it might be a good competition for a MLS-based "USA A" team to get some practice together against top opposition, push their case for inclusion in the first-choice international squad.

Didn't this cede its place on the calendar to the Gold Cup?

Wait how did that happen? I remember the Gold Cup and US Cup running concurrently for most of the '90s.

it is really MLS that was new and bumped the US Cup. The US Cup was invented because a lot of the USA team did not have club jobs.

i agree and i enjoyed it also. the perfect time will be in the 2012, 2016, 2020 rotation. i believe the only teams we could not field are the 16 in the euro's.

It was just a series of friendlies. It became tougher for European and South Americans to bring top sides for all 3 games.

The USA is better off trying to schedual single friendlies against top teams because with a single friendly, you can have a better chance that the opponent will bring a better team.
