Wow. I must say, this is one of the reasons why I think more should be done to make officiating less subjective. Too many calls are needlessly left to the discretion of the official, rather than clerly codified and consistently enforced. This lends itself to fixing matches and makes it harder to identify match fixing.

With how much money is in the game and all of the betting going on it's only going to get worse.

I would think that this combined with the Henry handball fiasco would push FIFA even closer to video technology -- to at least prevent clear cut decisions from being shaded one way or the other.

Default Match Fixing Scandal in CL, Europa League

Surprised there's no thread on this yet.

Quote:
Police said on Friday that more than 50 raids had been conducted in Britain, Switzerland, Austria and Germany.

Authorities believe they have arrested the leaders of the gang suspected of manipulating games to make money on betting. No identities were released, though they said about 200 people are suspected.

Among the games believed to have been manipulated are three Champions League matches and 12 Europa League games, all played this year.

Games in nine countries are believed to have been manipulated, though there were none in England, Spain, Italy or France.

The suspected games were in Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Croatia, Slovenia, Turkey, Hungary, Bosnia and Austria. The betting syndicate leaders are suspected of making £9 million by bribing players, coaches, referees and officials.

Investigators are describing it as the biggest match-fixing scandal in European football history.

Of course Matt Le Tissier even admits to fixing a special betting market over 10 years ago and as far as I am aware nothing has come of that.

It's mostly second division games and (weirdly) friendlies that they're talking about.
