Discussion of strengths/weaknesses of best NTs .... (with a mention of the USMNT)
Fabio Capello speaks
.............
The point about Spain's relative physical weakness has some truth to it, but it didn't seem to worry them too much in the European Championships of 2008. Teams whose intention it was to kick them out of their stride had to catch them first. None of them did. The only side in the last few years to raise any question marks about Spain was, oddly enough, the USA, whose simple (but fair) harrying tactics and speedy counter-attacks produced an unexpected shock in the Confederations Cup, but you could still put it down to an off-day. Argentina tried the same in Madrid on Saturday night, but still went home defeated.
.............
Thoughts? Opinions?

Your post is a little misleading.
The quotation you cite is from Phil Ball, the writer of an article about Fabio Capello. Unfortunately, Capello didn't speak these words about the USA.

Yeah that quote is from Phill Ball. A decent article but a little biased I think. Although I'm not sure why Capello mentioned Spain after a game between England and Brazil.

true i took the title of the article and left it intact.... and NOW i realize it might mislead people.... Even if unintentional, my apologies.....
Anyway i thought it was interesting to think that based even on feelings of international soccer writers..... the US can have a say in breaking the systems/tactics of a supposed power... Perhaps, even if there is a tough draw in December, the US may still manage to do well in South Africa,.....We will see....

well i don't think there's a chance we'll face any tougher teams.
1. current (and historically) #1 ranked team, Brazil
2. WC Champions, Italy
3. African Champions, Egypt
4. and the first round against the team that had the longest winning streak ever, Spain.
5. Then Brazil, again.

Probably not, but I think in all probability that was a one-off exceptional tournament for the U.S.
We clearly got results above our abilities and at times looked hapless.
Plus we've lost our counterattacking threat and harrying every game throughout a tournament like the world cup, almost certainly with pretty much the same players, will catch up to them if they get out of the group. Still might be good enough to get of the group, if we can find some goals somewhere.

Yep, as of right now, it's hard to overstate the impact of the loss of Davies. Doesn't help to lose Gooch, either. In addition to his ton of experience in the back, he added a bit of an offensive dimension, as well. His long throw-in's were a weapon, and his heading/knock-down ability in the box was a threat.
W/o Davies & Gooch, we're a different team.
