Default Utah developer looking to buy share of Real Salt Lake

Utah owner working to sell 49 percent of RSL
Salt Lake Tribune

I don't know what to make of this, Is Dave and his soccer dream reached the limit?.. Or could this be a blessing from above..
Quote:
Dave Checketts is in "advanced discussions" to sell nearly half of Real Salt Lake to local real estate developer Dell Loy Hansen.
Spokesman Eric Gelfand confirmed that Checketts and his Sports Capital Partners Worldwide are close to selling 49 percent of the team to Hansen, though the deal has not yet closed. Gelfand declined to reveal the price Hansen will pay.
The owner of the Wasatch Property Management real estate firm based in Logan, Hansen could not be reached immediately for comment. But he recently confirmed his part in the deal in the weekly business newspaper, The Enterprise , saying he will "be considered the local partner."
All of the proceeds from the deal will remain with RSL, sources within the organization said, and are not tied to Checketts' effort to buy the NFL's St. Louis Rams. Nor does the sale indicate the team is facing financial difficulty, the sources said.

Is the thread title actually accurate?

The ellipsis, after all, would be finished by "...another Utahan."

After a bet of digging, the thread title is pretty much accurate. They are working on a deal.

"Hansen's company is sponsoring 20 Real players and staff to live in its various apartment communities."

Another great way to establish loyalty to a club from some of the poorest MLS players--give them free or subsidized rent.

Very interesting developments.

As usual, you miss the point which is that Checketts is selling to another local. It's not like RedBull GmBH is buying a piece of RSL or anything.

Anyhow, the title of the article in YOUR ACTUAL LINK is "Owner working to sell 49 percent of RSL."

Way to be sensationalist (at least you didn't shill your blog this time).

Does that count against the cap? I ask in all seriousness but I think it's something I'd like to see more teams do, especially for their lower paid players.

I'm pretty sure it does not count against the cap.

It will cause a controversy for the same reason that the chartered flights issue did. Perceived benefit to playing on one team over another.

Selling a minority interest to a local owner is something with which Checketts has experience. When he bought the NHL's St. Louis Blues in 2006, Checketts immediately sought out a local owner. He eventually sold a minority stake to Tom Stillman, and Checketts believes that helped strengthen the local ties for the Blues franchise. And he's hoping for similar results in Utah.
