Default Future MLS club(s) break away from USL

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/story/2009/...ew-league.html

Fascinating.

So Vancouver will go a year in a new league before coming to MLS, and Montreal will also jump ship.

Portland apparently stays a final year in the USL-1.

Wow!
How many teams will this leave in USL-1? I don't see how USL-1 can survive this.

"Cooper said the team owners are in active conversations with several teams and organizations throughout the world which have expressed interest in joining the new league."

Maybe they can convince MLS to join them!

See long discussion here. The USL will have 8 teams next year. The TOA League 7. It's an open question as to whether either will survive.

But, USL1 aside, the USL will survive. There are more than a hundred other teams in the other leagues under the USL umbrella.

I just don't see the point of this new league especially for Vancouver and Montreal. Why would Vancouver or Montreal bother? It seems like a lot of time money and effort for very little.

Does anyone else think this is a Ponsi scheme? Maybe they should call it the Bernie Madoff League.

What was the point of MLS in 1996 when there was USL?
I guess competition is good.

both Vancouver and Montreal said when they enter MLS they would keep their side in the new league but in a different location

basically both sides have stated they were going to have a farm team...
