Default Made a player laugh this weekend...

...and that right there makes it all worth while Anyway here's the story. Was working a U13G Premier match this weekend. Closely battled game, fairly skilled for the age group, score at half time is 0-0. I noticed a parent that was standing near mid-field and was pretty boisterous during the first half. We even joked about him as a crew at half time. Early in the second half, I hear him yelling at a player while we're waiting on a goal kick to get setup. The red team player standing next to me lets out a big sigh, rolls her eyes and says under her breath "just shut up". I looked at her and asked her if the guy standing up at mid-field was her dad and she begrudgingly said "yeah". I asked her if she'd like me to throw him out (I was half serious because his constant hollering at her was having an affect on her play and enjoyment of the game). The look on her face was priceless. She actually seemed to think about it for a minute, then laughed and said "no, it's alright".

I'm still not sure what I'd have done if she had said yes.

It might be a safer ride home this way. "Dad, I kept you from getting embarrassed and thrown out of the game today."

It's an interesting approach. "OK kids, should I throw the loud mouth out?"

Or huddle with the kids, then go over to the LM, "sir, it's a split decision on whether you go or stay. Keep it up, and we'll do a recount."

For many years I have said that we should ban parents from youth soccer games through U14.

Then the parents should be forced to attend U15+ games to see what a bunch of brats they raised.

I don't know about banning... Maybe a case-pack of duct tape?

This did not happen to me.

Just before checking the player passes the CR announces, "I have no patience with fans who start harassing me from the opening whistle. I just dismiss them."

The players look at each other and say to one, "Go talk to your dad."

After the game the dad asked the CR why he was so honored to get warned before the game had even started.

"I didn't. I told the team that I would not put up with any harassment and they immediately thought of you."

I can think of a couple of situations I could have used that. As I think of those moments, the only word that comes to mind is "priceless".

I did this once with an entire sideline, U16 girls. Player came by and asked me to do something about all the parents jabbering... no players or coaches had complained much, but the sideline was very vocal and getting louder.

Great! So at the next stoppage, I held up play and walked over to the spectators. "Folks, the players have asked me to ask you to please be quiet, relax, and just watch the game."

Silence. You could hear jaws hitting the ground. A few scattered claps. The rest of the game was much more enjoyable.

I think we should just turn a camera on them and then later on show it to them. Their behavior is ridiculously funny at times, and downright sad at others.
