Default OT: Richmond Flying Squirrels

A new Eastern League minor league baseball team. I have read that more than a few people hate the name. I myself kinda like it. With a unique and marketable logo they might just have hit a homerun with this one. Beats the hell out of "Sockers" or "Thunder" IMO.

Why would you call a baseball team the Sockers?

Better than calling an indoor soccer team "the Sockers" or an indoor football team "the Thunder" How's that? I hate generic names and / or logos.

I wouldn't call Sockers a generic name. It's been used several times in San Diego and by at least one team in Chicago and one team in Midland, Texas. It can't be generic. It isn't even really a word.

Thunder and Lightning have been used extensively. Partly because they are so cool. In fact, Baltimore has had a Thunder (NLL) AND a Lightning (CBA).

Um, yes...there was (is) a Chicago Sockers club team that played a year or two in the PDL. I'm not sure if the club program is still around.

According to Thor.

Thunderstorms are cool. The imagery is cool. They've just been used probably more than any other name in sports.

We had the Mahoning Valley AF2 team called the Thunder, and their logo was awful.
