Handball by the keeper, outside the box.
Last night I was playing in a 30+ men's game, the following sequence occurred. I am a referee, but in this game I was playing center-back. This is not a complaint, just a request for clarification to see if I am missing something.
Late in a game that we are up 2-0, my keeper comes out and grabs a loose ball in the penalty area, last played by the other team. He looks up and decides to take off with the ball. According to referee's view he sees the keeper let go of the ball a step to late and blows the whistle. (For once) I didn't question the call and immediately sprint over to the spot of the foul to front the ball. I figured I would absorb the yellow card for DR since my keeper was taking his sweet time getting back in goal.
While I was making my slooooooooow stroll backwards to give the 10 yards, I hear the referee tell the other team that it is an indirect kick while raiseing his arm straight up. Thinking to myself that this should be a direct kick, I keep my mouth shut since it is benefitting my team.
At the end of the game while shaking hands with the other team and the referee I asked him about the call for an IDK. He told me that since it was outside the box and it involved the keeper it was always an IDK. I tried to discuss it with him, but he started to get irritated so I left it alone.
He was obviously an experienced referee since he was wearing a STATE REFEREE badge, but shouldn't this have been a direct kick just outside the box for a hand ball?? Or am I missing something.

Since this is NJ, maybe we should leave this to Alberto to explain!
"It was outside the box and it involved the keeper it was always an IDK" - FALSE!!!
A Handball is either a DFK/PK or trifling/non-intentional! - once the Keeper is out of the PA he is no different than any other player.
Either you or the referee were missing something!

I thought maybe he called something I didn't see, but he confirmed after the game that the call was for handling by the keeper.

Why an experienced referee would not chalk this up to trifiling is beyond me.

MetroStone,
Just a quick clarification. The ball was placed outside the PA for the IFK. Is that correct?

yes, just outside - which only confirmed my initial thought to why he blew the whistle

ding, ding, ding........it wasn't like he gained an advantage, there was no one around him.
though a better question is why my keeper took off in the first place, we were up 2-0. I could understand it if we were down 0-1 and he saw the opening, but for christ sake use your head. to make it worse he started to argue with the ref instead of sprinting back to his goal.........I wanted to kill him.
