Losing your cool as a ref
Ok, so we make a huge deal about being stone-faced, being business like and not interacting with parents and coaches, but can you recall any examples of when you have lost it? or perhaps been disrespectful to a jerk parent?
I can remember a U13 game as a CR with a young AR who correctly flagged that an attacker in an offside position was interfering with a defender - even though she didn't get the ball.
I had a second game on the field otherwise I would have left and after, a parent who has a beer gut bought and paid for came up to me with his kid in one hand and a lawn chair in the other and proceeded to tell me how I am arrogant, rude, and dont know the laws. There's no explaining the call to this guy who keeps on about how i have a big head and after a few minutes, I interrupt him and ask him that since its a rec game, did his kid have fun? Thats all that matters. - Then I tell him that if I could call a game from a chair, does he think I'd be out there running the field?
And a few months ago, I had an attacker come in 15 yards from a foot offside to collect the ball. After I put the flag up, a fat parent told me that I "couldn't run that line for shit" I say over my shoulder, "you dont look like you've run anywhere in 10 years"

Great line! I laughed out loud at that one.
My most recent case of 'losing it' actually occurred while I was on the line, not in the middle. After 5 minutes or so, I could tell that this college coach completely had no clue what a foul was...or at least, his comments were doing a damn good job of disguising his knowledge
Rather than call the referee over for a yellow card, I allowed myself to be drawn into what soon became an UN-friendly dialogue, and eventually I got to the point of screaming at the top of my lungs for a good 5-10 seconds...and finally a few minutes later, we still had to caution the coach
Was my behavior totally inappropriate? Absolutely. But sometimes I try to take the 'embarrass them' route rather than going straight to the yellow (or red) card. This guy had no clue what he was talking about and I could only stand so much of it before I blew my top.

Too bad Massimo Bussaca wasn't there to tell the coach that he is "number 1"!

Re: Losing your cool as a ref
Haven't lost my cool at all this year...except once.
After a NFHS game where the center ref absolutely blew a soft red card situation and had one team play with ten players for more than a entire half...despite the fact the coach from the aggrieved team brought him the rule book at halftime.
Now this is a grade 6 state ref, does college games, and actually is very good... he simply didn't know the hs rule on soft reds, and refused to consider it when confronted with the rule book.
Game happens at a school where I'm very well respected. The visiting tea is the one who got the short end of the stick on the call.
Game ends and as I'm furling my flag and walking to midfield, I hear someone calling me over to the fence in front of the bleachers. I think its a visiting school official, so I go over to see what its about, and lo and behold its two parents who are irate at the center ref. The cr and ar (young female) see whats going on and come over. Long and short of it is one parent leans over real close to me and calls us all "pieces of shit". I tell him I highly doubt he would be saying that if he weren't behind the fence. He tells me to meet him in the parking lot and I take off in a dead sprint across the field to the parking lot. The cr and ar are running after me. It took the both of them, two of the home team coaches, and the home school ad to hold me back..........
Kind of funny now in retrospect, not so funny then..
I'v often wondered what makes moron parents like that tick...............

I had a player in an over 30 league tell me I reffereed like shit to which I replied "I was only trying to stay consistent with the way you played".
I also had a kid tell me I was the worst ref he had ever seen after his yellow card, to which I replied, "well good, then you wont have to see me at your NEXT match either, as I'm the cr in that one also" while showing him the red.

Love that line. There are lots of times I wish I could say something, but just have to bite the tongue. But I did say one thing this weekend at a youth match. I was AR and a parent who had been mouthy most of the first half was questioning an offside call, of course he was at least 20yds back upfield. This guy actually stepped almost onto the pitch to ask me if I really understood the "offsides rule" to which I turned to face him and said "Yeah, as a matter of fact I do". YHTBT, dripping sarcasm and inflection carried the moment and the rest of the parents started to exert some peer pressure to quell the loudmouth. Rest of the match was a breeze.

To be fair, soft red card is stupid, but anyway.... Anyone who threatens a referee should be barred, that's disgraceful. Although how many associations will back the parent over the referee?

Re: Losing your cool as a ref
Tourny in Virginia august heat. Five game set day Sat and its now game 3 on Sunday. Sweat pouring done the body as I am AR on a very aggresive offside trapping team. A few dads, holding umbrellas and leaning on the fence start making snarky comments about me keeping up. I mean, these fulls were SPRINTING up! Finally, I snap and yell at them:
"When you put your parasols down and give me 1000 sprints up this line for ther last 24 hour I will listen, Until then, shut up!"
Then I began to time taking my hat off and whipping the sweat out of it until I was near them and the sweat sprayed all over...perhaps even in their direction. This seemed to clear my sideline pretty quick.
