Daniel Hernandez - Officially Signed...
The following release will be sent out shortly. As a Season Ticket Holder, we wanted you to know about the release and player signing prior to it being made public.
FC DALLAS SIGNS MIDFIELDER/DEFENDER DANIEL HERNANDEZ
FRISCO, TX(Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009) - FC Dallas General Manager Michael Hitchcock today announced that the team has signed midfielder/defender Daniel Hernandez. Hernandez has received his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and is eligible for MLS action.
"I know Daniel Hernandez very well as a player having coached him at SMU," FC Dallas Head Coach Schellas Hyndman said. "He's a strong player that will add tremendous experience to our line-up. His time with the Mexican First Division and past success in MLS will help us in our final push for a playoff spot this season and in the future."
Hernandez began his professional career when he was drafted out of Southern Methodist University by the Los Angeles Galaxy in 1998. He would go on to spend time with the Tampa Bay Mutiny, the New York MetroStars and the New England Revolution for a total of 115 MLS games. He logged four goals and 15 assists over eight years.
The 33-year-old veteran also helped the New England Revolution to successful runs in 2002, 2005 and 2006, when the team won the Eastern Conference Championship and advanced to the MLS Cup Final where Hernandez started all three games.
The midfielder/defender also played for three Mexican First Division teams including Necaxa, Puebla F.C. and Jaguares de Chiapas over five years.
Hernandez grew up in nearby Tyler and attended SMU where he played under FC Dallas Head Coach Schellas Hyndman for three years. While at SMU, Hernandez was First Team All-American as an attacking midfielder.
In another roster move, forward/midfielder Alvaro "Tom" Sanchez was added to the Disabled List with a right ankle injury. Sanchez was signed by FC Dallas on April 3 on loan from AD San Carlos of Costa Rica's Primera Division. Sanchez appeared in three games for FC Dallas this season.

Re: Daniel Hernandez - Officially Signed...
I've always liked Hernandez as a player. He brings bite and versatility and leadership and is a good player to have in the locker room.
My question is where does he play for FCD and how does that make them better?
Does he play CB or D-mid and who sits as a result? I mean, Dallas has some holes on the field, but I don't really see Hernandez filling them.

Oh, but he DOES fill the position of "former SMU player."

This might as well be printed on the paper right along with the letterhead used for these things.

To answer your first question, wouldn't be surprised to see him start @ central defense at least this week. Who knows what kind of shape both John and Davies are in, and, mercifully, Torres is unavailable this week. Hernandez would fit in there, especially if the bus driver wants to keep Ricchetti back in his midfield spot.
As to your second question, I'll assume it was rhetorical, and will leave it at that.

Re: Daniel Hernandez - Officially Signed...
Is this a transfer from Necaxa or was he released and then just signed?

Gosh, and Lord knows we want to replicate the success of that program at the pro level.
When Bruce and Sigi surrounded themselves with former players, it at least made sense because, ya know, they'd WON CHAMPIONSHIPS at Virginia and UCLA and many of those players had gone on to play for the US (and abroad).
But Schellas is surrounding himself with players who never won anything in college which seems like its just continuing the pattern of mediocrity that has plagued this organization for so long.

Re: Daniel Hernandez - Officially Signed...
So how long before you guys trade for Colin Clarke (which would actually be a good acquisition) and use a DP on Ramon Nunez and sign Jay Needham?
(In fairness to Nunez, he has really blossomed since leaving MLS and is playing very well in Mexico and for Honduras.)
Is a Paul Broome comeback looming? What about Luchi Gonzalez, Tom Presthus and Carl Bussey? Where's Diego Walsh these days?

Colin Clarke is actually their former coach, he never played at SMU as far as I know. Colin Clark did but I don't think they have anything the Rapids would want to trade for. We've already stolen everything we wanted in the Ihemelu and Guarda trades.
