Default Totti's new contract, half of all polled fans object

Interesting article about Totti's contract renewal. A poll of over 4000 fans from Roma has found that over 50% of them object to the contract. The contract which lasts 5 years will equal 50 million euros (gross, with all taxes.)

A number that for many is too high, too high because of our inability to find money to buy a striker. Too high because while we are selling players to balance the books we aren't able to find the money to buy a decent 2nd goal keeper like Sorrentino.

I didn't expect the fan base to be so evenly divided. I'm against the contract at those figures. I think it's time to make good on all the talk of love for the club and the city and realize that at that age you need to accept a contract that gradually reduces so that the club can breathe and prepare for the next generation. However I never imagined so many so it like me.

Quote:

I'm rather surprised by the number of Roma fans that are opposed to the contract as well.

Totti has always had a God-like pressence amongst the giallorosso faithful, but I suppose even the most die-hard Roma/Totti fans are reasonable enough to realize that in our present situation contracts such as this one are a tad illogical.

I can understand if Totti signed a 2 year deal worth that much per season, as at least he will still have quite a bit to offer us over that stretch of time in terms of performances. But to be paying him that kind of money over a 5 YEAR period is somewhat unrealistic in my view.

My contract choice:
2009-2010 (age 33) - 4.5 million
2010 - 2011 (age 34) - 4 million
2011 - 2012 (age 35) - 3 million
2012 - 2013 (age 36) - salary cap (2.5 million) and so on if he continues to play

At this point, his play justifies his salary. Who's to say that in 5 years he is still able to perform at an elite level...probably not. But, i think Roma can eat his salary when Rosella is making a million and i'm sure other higher ranking management figures are making an enormous salary as well. He's the symbol of Roma and an idol in the city. The club needs to address it's other problems then worry about 5m.

I sure hope his play against Juventus isn't what you get for 5 million these days

Or Genoa....but his play in Europa has been phenomenal. I'm hoping he's had a few bad days at the "Serie A office"...but he really needs to step up his game in the league...otherwise, Roma don't stand a chance.

I think we would also be quite foolish in our own right if we are really gonna base what Totti is capable of doing solely on that 1 match against Juve though. Lets not forget that we were going up against a club that is a favorite to win the championship this season, and also happens to have a backline made up of the likes of Cannavaro and Chiellini.

Let me just say that like everyone here, I am a huge Totti fan. He is the heart of Roma. However, I have concerns. There have been rumblings that make me concerned that Totti is forgetting that he is a player on a team and not the team itself. Roma existed before him and it will go on after him. I have a feeling Totti is partially responsible for Spal leaving. Spal commented on Totti's play and how he wasn't listening to directions. Also, during one of the takeover bids someone involved said that Totti had too much influence on the club. At first I thought the guy was up in the night, but that combined with Spal's comments combined with the salary combined with a gut feeling, I have my doubts.

Thoughts? I'm waiting for someone to logically and systematically destroy my doubts so that I can sleep easy at night (even though Ranieri is the coach, sigh).
