Default The TESCO Cup 09/10

Current Holders - LSG Cambridge

I enjoyed the first year of the TESCO Cup last season but felt at times that results were a little 'too random' for my liking. So with that in mind, and after some very helpful contributions from others in the close season, there will be a change in the way the competition works.

Please read carefully.

This competition harks back to the days when the european competitions were based on straight knockout. But it does add a little S.American flavour with the addition of two championships, if you like. An Apertura and a Clausara.

A straight knockout with the 32 teams. They play each other home and away with away goals counting double and the 16 winners progress into the next round and so on until the final. This would take 10 gameweeks to complete. The winner of the Apertura is the first finalist.

We then do the same again and the second winner of the Clausara is the other finalist. In the unlikely event that the same team wins both then they're immediately declared champion and no final is required. (boo hiss)

Scoring for matches would be like this,

The home team gets a goal for every clean sheet kept by a GK, DF or CM. Captains points count double. To give home teams the advantage they used to hold in times gone by the GK will also score double but they will not be allowed to choose him as captain.

The away team gets a goal for every clean sheet kept by a GK, DF or CM. Again, captains points count double.

Any red cards will count -1 for that team.

Teams would play home and away legs and the winner progresses to the next round. Away goals count double, just as they do now in European knockout.

Tie breakers to decide a draw would be -

1) Captains double points nullified from both legs.
2) Substitutes not taken into account from both legs.
3) Goalkeepers double points nullified from both legs.
3) Overall team league scores from both games to decide the winner.

When the two winners of the Apertura and the Clausara have been decided the team with the highest +goals total for their winning campaign will have the choice to be either the home team or the away team in a one off final match to decide the overall champion.

Tiebreakers in this game will be decided as similar to the above.

All draws will be done randomly for each round of the competition.

The TESCO Cup will take 21 gameweeks to complete.

The Apertura will run from the 3rd gameweek for 10 consecutive gameweeks to the 12th gameweek.

The Clausara will run from the 14th gameweek for 10 consecutive gameweeks to the 23rd gameweek.

The final will take place on gameweek 25.

The 09/10 Apertura first round draw will be made later today(as I'm off work) and will be posted shortly after.

Thanks for posting some interesting reading while we wait for the US based crew to wake up.

Nice tweaks to this cup - looks like goals/assists are removed from the equation entirely? I like that - thought for a while about establishing a Defenders Cup but you've taken care of that already!

With the new South American flavor I'll call my team LSG Juniors for this cup.

Yes. Goals and assists have gone. blech gave the idea for making it more the opposite of Clan's Golden Boot.

Hopefully it'll be better for it.

Interesting. Looks like this may be the tournament for my ultra-defensive team to shine.

p.s. How are you going to define who counts as a centre mid and who doesn't?

Perfect. A competition for a manager who forgot to draft forwards! Just what I needed this year.

Good luck, and thanks!

I'm starting to smell a conspiracy here! Was Lobo involved?

Thank you for pointing out the intended error on my part...

I wont be. That should read MID and not CM as all mids will be utilised in the scoring.
