Ex-England manager Sir Bobby Robson has died at the age of 76. He led his country to two World Cup finals, in 1986 and 1990, and took Newcastle United into the Champions League as recently as 2003. He passed away on Friday morning, after a long battle with cancer.
i have a friend who knew sir bobby personally as he played in england for a number of years
sir bobby was one of the people who took my friend 'under his wings' when he was a young promising player in the out-post of vancouver, canada; he got him a trial with wolverhampton and so began his professional career-- it was virtually unheard of for a canadian to play in england, but sir bobby saw my friend's potential and helped initiate the trial
this was the type of man sir bobby was-- a down-to-earth, soccer passionate, respectful and kind man-- a man of integrity and love for the beautiful game-- a man who valued friends
while i never met him personally, the words of my friend now living back in canada are filled with admiration and respect for sir bobby
i wish we could clone him in today's soccer market-- he will be sorely missed-- newcastle and england have never been the same since his time as head coach
he played and coached with honor and passion-- well done, sir bobby!
