The Biggest Trainwreck To Come...
The premise is simple. Discuss and then ascertain what option you believe will be the biggest trainwreck of the coming year. A few details on each of the options are penned out below to help you out:
Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Barcelona:
Infamous for not showing up for most of a big match, and sometimes not at all, the Balkan-pedigree Swede now finds himself sold to a club that's in more of the spotlight than he could imagine, where there are no "small games" and where there are always big dreams. Egomaniacs have a tendency to hang themselves if you give them enough rope - is the Barcelona move a noose with a silver lining?
Real Madrid's 'Mega Millions' Splurge:
Keeping up with the Jones' is a sure way of sending yourself both broke and into despair, so it is without any hesitation that Real Madrid's recent spending has attracted a lot of attention. Over 300 million Euros spent to try and match Barcelona's recent achievements could all go to nought if the whole thing collapses next season. But what a show it would be.
Mexico vs USA at the Azteca:
The most charged rivalry in North America never fails to ignite interest, and following El Tri's hoodoo-broken win over the USA in the Gold Cup Final this past week, to a resounding tune of 5-0, the upcoming World Cup Qualifier at the formidable Azteca is all but in the bag for Mexico. Unless of course the USA can then reverse the hoodoo-trickery and break a record of their own by winning away , South of the border.
The Beckham's 'LA Story':
The Donovan comments began the doubt, and one could sense things would get ugly after Beckham returned to LA after spending a loan stretch at AC Milan. After a heated on-field confrontation between Beckham and the LA Galaxy's fan support group, 'The Riot Squad', more turmoil involving comments about Victoria Beckham have made this a piece of US football news worth watching.
'AC' Onyewu's Season Pre-Peat:
Onyewu's solid match against Spain produced a shock move to AC Milan for the US defender, but his pre-season performances have shown none of the mettle that landed him the move to begin with. The only question is, will Onyewu be able to muster the same performances against Spain for AC Milan or is this 'US Enforcer' freight train heading for a derailment with a Serie A 'Pre-Peat' ?
Michael Owen to Manchester United:
The promising striker completed a move to Alex Ferguson's Manchester United recently after his previous contract expired. Although his talent is unquestionable, injuries have kept Owen from really shining. Have Manchester signed an injury-prone, glass cannon, or will Owen flourish for the Red Devils? Either way at least there's transfer fee to mull over if things don't go as planned.
Manchester City's 'High Hopes' for the EPL:
The Blues' multi-billionaire owners have no intent of letting Real Madrid be the only club in a top flight spending massive amounts of money to figuratively buy a title. After spending close to over 100 million Euros and bringing in notable talent like Carlos Tevez, Martin O'Neill might be correct in predicting that they can win the Premier League title. But like Real Madrid, if City cannot reach the high expectations that their spending suggests they should, it'll be a magnificent sight to see.

Re: The Biggest Trainwreck To Come...
I am biased and since it is a one and done I am saying the US v Mexico match.
This is a match that has the potential to turn into a mismatch right away, depending on how the US comes out. If they play like they did at the start of the Confed Cup or just prior to it, then it will be a long painful day for them. However if they come out like they did v Spain or Brazil, then it could be a long day for mexico.
As for over the long haul, City has everything to gain and not as much to lose. Why do I say that? Simple, yes they have spent big money, but they still lack the depth of Man Utd or Chelsea, and Liverpool and Arsenal are going to be tough to beat for a spot in Europe CL. So yeah they spent alot, but its still a 4 team race over the long haul.
RM spends like this every few years now, they will produce and be in it to the end.
So it will be either ibra or Gooch who are the biggest trainwreck and I would say Gooch is the likely one to be a bust.
But fck it, since this is WR, Gooch will become the US Enforcer, and he will dominate the Serie A so much that they will bow down before his stare of death at the beginning of every match!!
As for that other no name, inbra, abra, or whatever, isn't he the guy who posts here under the name section x? That guy is going to fall apart in the first 5 mins of his first match against Villareal or RM and have a complete mental breakdown and cry all the way back home never to show his half assed face again in La Liga.

Re: The Biggest Trainwreck To Come...
Onyewu has been such a trainwreck in preseason that I don't think he'll get any serious run of games in Serie A. Would still be my vote though.
La Liga is so weak outside the top 2 that Real Madrid can't really fail, last season they were winning 95% of games with Ramos in charge and with a much weaker team.
So Man City would be 2nd choice for failing behind "Goochie", too many mercenaries and a mediocre manager.

How can such an insignificant story in world football be the biggest trainwreck?
Or are you now going to change your opinion of his signing.
Smack talk has to either be realistic to be funny, or it has to be absurdly over the top. sendorange, you're getting into NapoliSupporter territory.

Re: The Biggest Trainwreck To Come...
Are we talking biggest trainwreck story for World Rivalries/Bigsoccer or in world football in general?
If its the former I'd say Gooch. If its the latter I'd say Real Madrid.

Madrid can most definitely fail. They failed big time last season and there wasn't even the same high expectations.
BTW, Madrid lost 10 games in the league last year despite benefitting from a quirk in the La Liga schedule which allowed Madrid to play teams right after Barca softened those opponents up the previous round. 10 leagues losses, a loss in the first hurdle of the Spanish Cup and 4 CL losses. Your 95% is a tad off.

Re: The Biggest Trainwreck To Come...
The unsurprising lead at this stage is held by 'AC' Onyewu, however there are actually votes for all other options.

Either way. It is partly a serious-themed thread, because the options above are genuine contenders for a 'Trainwreck' title, and not withstanding what's just popular right now, the entire poll's open long enough for any of those options to become meaningless or the exact opposite.
It's also taking the piss because it's in World Rivalries.
