Using all 3 GK's at the World Cup?
This came up over on the US boards. The only one I can remember is Greece in 1994. Anyone know of any others?

Re: Using all 3 GK's at the World Cup?
Belgium in WC 1982 with Pfaff (first 3games), after he got injuried ,a clash with teammate Gerets (both were out for the rest of the tournament).
Custers replaced him for the 2round game against Poland, but blamed by the media for the 3goals from Boniek. (0-3)
Munaron replaced him in the game against the Sovjet-Union .(0-1 defeat and Belgium were out of the tournament).
France used also the 3goalkeepers in their 3games of WC 1978.

If it happens so few times, why even bring three keepers? It seems like it would be more useful to bring an extra outfield player so that you can rotate the squad a bit or have back up for injured players.
Admittedly your screwed if both of your keepers get injured, but the chances of that are quite low...

You just answered your own question - not all 20 outfield players will be used so it makes sense to have that extra back up in goal.

I feel like there have been more times where there haven't been enough strikers/central defenders/whatever else than times when there haven't been enough goalkeepers. It just seems like it would happen so little that it would benefit you more to have extra outfield players, especially since outfield players are generally more susceptible to the effects of fatigue (i.e. they're running for 90 minutes every match).

I think FIFA has mandated that everyone bring 3 keepers, though trying to find rules on FIFA's web site is impossible.
Ah found it.
Article 26, Item 3
"Each association will then be required to provide FIFA with a final list
of no more than 23 players (three of whom shall be goalkeepers)."

Beat me to it!!
If it was not going to be three GKs, the squad would have been 22 not 23 and that is like having two full size teams on the pitch without the extra GK. GK is a specialist position and the outfield positions are be replaced by other outfielders from different positions. GK has not that type of freedom.

Re: Using all 3 GK's at the World Cup?
Does that clause mean that goalkeepers selected for the World Cup cannot play in any other position?

No idea,if its allowed. I remind that Campos from Mexico was a good player, forward I believe...
From the GK's at this time I don't know anyone who plays also as a fieldplayer.
It would be a risk to bring only 2GK to the WC,(supposed to be it was allowed by FIFA),coz what you gonna do when both GK's indeed got injured at the same time ?
Play the WC-finale with your striker in the goal ??

Yes. They are not allowed.
You can use your field players to play keeper however.
