And, in the Land of Red:

Project Mayhem will be in full force.

Those familiar with how visitors are treated in Saprissa know what I reference.

No urine, no batteries, just SLEEP deprivation the night before.

Or local recruits will guarantee certain AC's won't be working and certain alarms will be working the night of 8/16 into the AM of 8/17.

And in the Land of Red, I went to the Oracle of Kong.

Following appropriate supplication with bananas the all seeing one foretells:

1) minute 8, Pichon breaking thru, pulled down by Moore, yellow to Moore, free kick by Zhao, celebrations to the mighty Kong

2) minute 17, corner to Zhao, with the all towering EI, hovering above all, goal to Iverson, celebrations to the might Kong

3) minute 73 handball by Hamm, goal allowed by the I'm blind, I'm deaf, I'm only the ref, disavower of the all knowing Kong, blashemy to all permitted

4) Minute 82 Pichon set through by the prescient Tullock, with FINAL praise to Kong, nutmegs the keeper, all celebrations to Kong erupt throught the Land of Red.

Thus seeth the Oracle of Kong!!

In the LAnd of Red, there are two women siiting c few rows from me. One is about mid 40's or so and another is about 70 or so.

They've been there since day 1 last year, very enthusiastic cheering, both of them, mother and daughter.

Well today, before the match, the older woman came up to me to discuss how much fun they've had, and the woman had a framed photo of her son and the best player ever to lace them up, Edson Arantes do Nasciemento.

Her son is Curtis Leeper and the other guy was Pele, both from NASL days.

She spoke about her son being selected from the 1980 Olympic team, but his dream going unfufilled, because of politics.

And then the older woman, about 70, said how much WUSA meant to her, because she herself, and her daughter never had such a chance .

And this to me tells me all I need to know about WUSA and whaty it means to some people.

Her loss was far loss the the Charge ever had.

Her loss was far more than her son had.

But her loss isn't total, WUSA is here, and it's not about winning or losing games.

Have you e-mailed this story and experience to Tim Murphy?

A story from the lady(ies) would make for a fabulous feature on the Charge site- and also the WUSA site. Thanks so much for sharing with us.

Great, Adam!

Let us know how it turns out, if you get a response, please.

I once conducted surveys at a Breakers game and was told, "The league needs to give credit to us!! Us old timers!! We've been playing and organizing LONG before the league started." This lady and her friend proceeded to tell me about old leagues, etc- as it was more of a sermon-like experience, I stuck it back in my head.

The idea of a "before the WUSA" and how those ladies are supporting the WUSA is still rolling around in my head... to hear the voices of wisdom.. the crone..the old woman... is a missing and beautiful part...

We have the mothers... the soccer moms..and we have the maidens.. the young unwed stars.. now we need to give credit and share the stories of the old ones.....

I'd be interested in a piece (on the WUSA site) with a story from a lady or several women who live in each of the WUSA cities- and regularly attend the games... what stories and sharings do they have.. what musings are they filled with?

May beauty and truth be inspirations..

For anyone interested in a brief history of women in soccer:

http://www.sover.net/~spectrum/womensoverview.html

is a good precise start.

I became a soccer fan because I spent most of my youth growing up in Germany.

And with so little available here, wherever and whomever played it, became an interest to me.

1991 World Cup in China where the USA matches were tape delayed exploded my interest in the womens game.

and no matter how you feel about FIFA, you must admit their advocacy of the womens game is a strong positive political statement.

recently, Jamaica disbanded their female national team, because they couldn't finance it.

Personally, I think this is a major issue, any national federation should not have to disband their female sides simply because of lack of money. The next step for FIFA is to ensure funds are available to countries like Jamaica, who would have a national womens team if the money was available.

It's in this area where I believe the major battle for the future of female soccer will be fought.
