refresh my memory...S. Africa is playing to make the African nations cup, so they not only need to make it out of this round but finish in the top 3 of the final group?

Seeding in CAF stage 3 , (Second Round) .

Criteria for designation of seeded teams for the combined preliminaries of the South Africa 2010 World Cup and Angola 2010 ACN has been approved.

    The criteria are as follows:

The sum of the points accumulated in conformity of the following three criteria will be added in order to determine the five teams who will be in the first pot, those who will be in the second pot and so on.

    Criteria No. 1

The number of points obtained during the group matches of the first round. Each team will play six matches in this round having the possibility of reaching a maximum total points of 18. Each team among the 20 who will qualify to the second round will keep the points that they obtained during the first round.

    Criteria No. 2

The classification during the final tournament of the African Cup of Nations 2008 in Ghana will be taken into consideration.

At the end of the competition, the teams will be classified from 1 to 16. The Africa Champion will get 16 points, the runner-up 15 and the team coming at the third place 14 and finally the team coming at the last place will get only one point.

The countries who will qualify to the second round and which did not qualify to the finals of the African Cup of Nations 2008 will receive one point each under this criterion.

    Criteria No. 3

The 20 teams having qualified to the second round will be classified from 1 to 20 in conformity to their last FIFA ranking before the date scheduled for the draw of the second round.

The team coming in the first place will get 20 points, the second 19 points and the team coming at the 20th place will get one point.

The points obtained by adding the points obtained in each one of the above mentioned criteria will be added.

The first five teams will be placed in the pot No. 1, the teams from 6 to 10 in the pot No. 2, the teams from 11 to 15 in the third pot and the teams from 16 to 20 in the fourth pot.

Each group in the second round will comprise one team from each one of the 4 pots.

Holy crap. If they'd just get rid of the FIFA ranking criteria, that would almost make sense.

Yeah. I'm starting to really be bothered by the FIFA ranking being included in criteria for events. Being as the events that are the other criteria are used to determine the FIFA ranking.

Or, more specifically, in this case, there are 3 criteria for the 3rd round draw pots ranking:

    1. Points gained in the 2nd round qualifying games.
    2. Rank in the CAF Nations Cup.
    3. FIFA ranking right before the draw.

However, except for friendlies, (3) is determined by (1) and (2). OK, so it's a complex relationship. (3) includes games going back to the previous year. I don't see any indication of when the 3rd round draw will take place, but it seems like it could be any time from October 11 to sometime early in '09. Which means that for all intents and purposes, there will be little outside of qualifying and the Nations Cup to effect the FIFA ranking.

Since the FIFA ranking is utter crap, it throws who knows what into this scheme. It would be interesting to see how the draw would fare using only criteria (1) and (2) and compare it to the final result.

Eritrea withdraw from qualifiers -> fifa.com.

Eritrea was in group 11 with Togo, Zambia and Swaziland. It will not be replaced.

With Eritrea out, teams qualifying from Group 11 will have at most 12 points.

They can let in stage 2 a "lucky loser" team from stage 1, Guinea Bissau or Somalia ?

Could be more withdrawals from Africa ?

Sudan - Chad would be a interesting match, but Im not sure Chad will not withdraw ?

So, this basically comes down to a Togo - Zambia home and away, plus whoever can beat up on Swaziland the most as a tiebreaker.

I wonder how this will affect the calculation of 2nd placed teams to progress. Only using results against top 3 teams? Or not allowing the 2nd placed team from this group to progress? Or using average number of points? I don't hope they use the second possibility because that would eliminate either one of their 2006 qualifiers or one of the best teams never to have qualified, but I'm not sure what the best solution is. Actually I am, but since there won't be a replacement team this will not happen.
