New York City Is The Top Candidate For the 18th Spot
" SoccerTimes was told off-the-record by an MLS official that the top candidate would be New York City with a soccer-specific stadium built adjacent to Citi Field, the Mets' new stadium, set to open next to Shea Stadium in Flushing, Queens, in 2009. The league envisions a bitter rivalry between this club and the New York Red Bulls, who are based in New Jersey. League sources admitted, however, getting this done would be hugely complicated and largely dependent on the development of Citi Field."

I would love to know how credible the source is! Thats a good find though. I hear a lot of rumors that Wilpon is going to do it.
By the way - drove by citi field the other day - it looks amazing!

Re: New York City Is The Top Candidate For the 18th Spot
It sounds like Garber and the league really want NYC more than anything. They want to have a NY derby, and by adding a second team to the region I think they will gain a strong hold on the NY market. Think about it the NY market has 2 NBA teams, 2 NFL teams, and 2 MLB teams. And each of those has a great rivalry with the other. There is no question about there being enough fans. Each borough could have its own team and have a big fanbase! If the NY area can support three NHL teams without a problem, then 2 MLS teams wouldn't have a problem either.

Re: New York City Is The Top Candidate For the 18th Spot
I think that this is a crucial moment to do realize to all ( Wilpon, Garber, Bloomberg etc ) that New York City WISHES and above all DESERVES a soccer team in Queens.
Is it possible to distribuite thousands of leaflets in the subways, buses, ferryboats etc to explain to million of New Yorkers that there is a real possibility that in only 2 years NYC can have a true soccer team in MLS and that is fundamental their help ( to sign the petition for example )
NOVEMBER 2008 : MLS chooses NYCFC
MARCH 2010 : Begins the dream

I hope we both have a franchise and a stadium ready like Toronto. And we dont have to wait that long. That is unlikely tho

That is actually a very good idea that I haven't heard mentioned. Advertising NYC FC on the subway in certain areas would do the BB a lot of good.
