He can't. Which is why he was smart to not take the job when approached. The USSF runs the show, and he's nothing but a hot air merchant.
I'm pretty sure he never mentioned coaching for the nats. He made a vague, polite reference to coaching in MLS sometime in the future.
He said he foresees himself coaching the US team on an Spanish ESPN (Jorge Ramos y Su Banda) when asked about coaching a national team in Europe. He said no but he sees himself coaching the USA team. I could not believe my ears. Her said no but foresees coaching the USA. He said it in his style where mentions ideas rapid fire - very quickly. I kept asking my friends, some said yes others could not understand him. He is the master at stirring the pot.
i read the rogers article and a couple of things stuck out: he said criticism of bradley was unfair after the wc and he deserves another 4 yr stint, and also he wrote "even if bradley departs" rogers could have said "when bradley departs" imo, he is prepping us for a contract extension. i now believe the chances of bob returning are 60%, mls insider getting the job 40%, and outsider 0%
Eh, the same people said that Bob was a candidate at Fulham. And that was a complete hogwash. I can see him landing with DC or even back with Chivas as a lot likelier scenario.
Hmm, Martin O'Neill is suddenly available... http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=813068&sec=england&cc=5901 I'd imagine Gulati will at least make contact with him to see if he might be interested come December. I also imagine that O'Neill wouldn't be interested and even if he were, we couldn't afford him.
Bob Bradley 4-1 to replace O'Neill at William Hill currently... http://sports.williamhill.com/bet/en-gb/betting/e/1018766/sp/Next-Aston-Villa-Manager.html Trails only Martin Jol (2-1).
what exactly is wrong with Martin O'Neill? He fits the personality profile and he has a history of success wherever he goes.
Martin O'Neill would be an excellent hire for the Nats, but given Martin's stature in England he surely must have an eye on club management still. Would the USSF allow him to coach a club team as well as the Nats, a la Guus Hiddink? If the USSF would make that allowance, and Martin would be interested, we could have a great match here. Martin has gotten a lot out of a talented but very thin Aston Villa squad and they seemed to punch above their weight for quite some time. List me as those who would love to see what he could do at the helm of the Nats.
Must not be in England. He left a pretty good setup and and all of the teams above him are locked in w/ mangers. Can't see him staying in England and downgrading.
I think that may have been due to Villa's selling off two of his best players in consecutive years (Gareth Barry last year, James Milner seemingly any minute now this year). What could ultimately lead to Martin saying "no" to the Nats, however, is if he decides to sit out a year and see if they are any high profile casualties, either in England or abroad. As you correctly point out Napoli, he didn't leave Villa to downgrade. If he agrees to manage the Nats, that would likely dissuade big club teams from wanting to hire him as he's already committed to managing us. He may well decide he's better off turning down national team offers and let the chips fall where they may in the various top European leagues.
Why would he want to coach the US when an American owner is the reason he resigned? Seems like the rumor of Young to Spurs sealed the deal and he had enough. And Milner seemingly on his way to City. O'Neill was probably told he must sell first and was fed up. Also while he's a good manager he is a bit stubborn in his approach. Those who don't like Bob will probably not like O'Neill. O'Neill is the type of guy who sticks to his guns and doesn't like to try new things. He likes a fixed XI and goes with the regulars. Similar to how some complain when Clark and Michael are paired in the middle regardless of the situation or opponent. O'Neill is a big name but people will still b*tch. Another issue would be his salary which is probably too much for the USSF.
I recall O'Neill and Kasey Keller having a bit of an up-and-down relationship when they were with Leicester City.
Martin Oneill's long ball style of soccer would not fit well with our players. We would be going a step down rather than progressing with Onei'll.
