To be fair refs always seem to let more stuff go in big games.

About MVB, the guy simply knows how to foul and hide it. Yesterday wasnt the only time he got away with some shameful tackles, all Bundesliga fans know what kind of player he is.

The Dutch shall never judge our football again, because what I saw yesterday may have been the key to beat them, but it was still ugly and awful football. They were really lucky that Webb didn't show 2 red cards in the first 45 minutes.

    That doesn't make it right.

He didn't "hide" a damned thing. You could see all his fouls at full speed.

van Bommel has been doing this his entire career. It isn't something he started doing when he moved to Bayern.

Obviously not, I was just referring to how red cards offences turn into yellow cards, and yellows turn into warnings in big games. IMO Refs are under instructions to let more stuff go in finals, and rivals matches.

Yet he gets away with them almost on weekly bases.

TBH I never paid attention to him before he moved to Bayern.

I don't think they are "instructed" to do anything. But one thing I knew when I saw that Webb was going to be the referee was that he would allow more physical play.

However, I also thought he would not allow thuggery.

It seems his desire to not want to be the deciding factor in the match overrode his memory of the laws of the game.

In club football, since he's been "known", he's played with one of the biggest named clubs in the country he's played in. That has helped.

On the international stage, he wasn't around for much of the van Basten period, so his reputation didn't have those years to take more hits.

But everyone has known that MvB can be a hack for a long time.

Same case for Zidane vs Cannavaro, or Ronaldo vs Kahn. They usually give the player who carried the team else the team would be no where near what they have achieved.

and that's rubbish when it comes to Uruguay. And then we have choices like Maicon over Lahm...which don't make any sense at all.

I doubt people would be giving Maicon as much credit if it weren't for that spectacular goal.

No doubt a great player in his position but i think that goal is what made up a lot of people's minds....wrong or not.

yep, fully agreed. Also unless an individual's performance has been so incredible in the group stage and in the round of 16 match, I don't think his inclusion is warranted in the team of the tournament, especially before someone who actually has gotten further.

For me it's the marketing factor aside from the goal with Maicon. he's the best in his position in the world, just came from an amazing club season and it would simply look bad for the advertisers and FIFA which has been promoting its Brazilian starlets, and not have even one in the final eleven.

FIFA kisses their ass. I wonder if what Villa did first game, had a German done something similar whether they would be suspended or not.. *Remembers Frings incident in 06'*

Right. This is precisely why Effenberg has always been more popular than Scholl. Or why the short, fat and dark-haired Gert Mueller never made it in Germany. You've really hit the nail on the head there. :D

For the second time in WCs, a South American side has not been able to beat a European side in the knockout stages of a WC. The first was in 2006, I think.

All the games were won by European teams, and that too in regulation time:

    Holland Brazil 2-1
    Germany Argentina 4-0
    Spain Paraguay 1-0
    Netherlands Uruguay 3-2
    Germany Uruguay 3-2

Also in 1934, 1966, and 1990 (Argentina won all their games against European teams in 1990 on penalties).

I think because of the Frings incident we KNOW what FIFA would have decided had a German done what Villa did.

And not only they decide Villa did nothing to warrant any punishment... but they actually give them the fair play award!.

Re: The Other Teams Thread - WC 2010 Edition Vol. II [R]

I felt the WC got over quite soon. :( It comes only once in 4 years. We deserve so much better.

I am of the opinion that the tournament be expanded to 64 teams. That way, many of the good teams that are left out ( Russia, Ireland, Bosnia, Sweden, Scotland,Bahrain,Egypt, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, Iran, China, India , Bhutan etc) will also feature at the world stage and won't miss out due to less spots in their respective confederations.

In this format, we should have 8 groups of 8 teams each. In each group, each team will play each team once. That means we will have a total of 8!/(2!*6!) = 28 games. From each group, we will have 4 teams advancing. Hence total number of games in group stages = 224

The comes the round of 32 -> then the round of 16 -> then the QF -> then the SF-> the final.

This way we will have a total of 224+16+8+4+2+1( for 3rd place)+1= 256 games.

That is 4 times the current number of games. The WC can be played over a 2 month period, in this case.

Edit: I know the nay sayers are going to respond with moot points like logistical difficulties, lack of audience for a Nicaragua vs Mauritiana game f.e, etc etc etc.

Such a WC winner will be thoroughly grilled over a period of time and the chances of flukes/upsets will be lesser. Further more, all the 23 of the squad can get proper playing time.
