Austin: Day 2 Written by revseye on February 24, 2009 Revolutionsoccer.net http://blog.revolutionsoccer.net/?p=1819 Q & A with Kevin Alston Revolutionsoccer.net, 2/25/09 http://www.revolutionsoccer.net/search/index.cfm?ac=searchdetail&pid=36394&pcid=115&rss=1
I thought Twellman was out with concussion related things? This is good he is back or has he been for a while?
He's been back for a while. IIRC, they said he only missed training one day and never said he would miss more than one.
They lost 3-0. Austin scored 1 in the first third, 2 in the second third, and 0 in the third... third. Group 1: Reis Albright — Valentino — Heaps — Alston Nyassi — Joseph — Videira — Ralston Mansally — Dube Group 2: Simmons Albright — Barnes — Heaps — Tierney Maxwell — Joseph — Larentowicz — Thompson Ralston — Dube Group 3: Knighton Alston — Barnes — Valentino — Igwe Maxwell — Hamzagic — Phelan — Thompson Salvaggione — Fernandez https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/newreply.php?do=postreply&t=956547
Sorted by Mins Played: 60 Albright Heaps Joseph Ralston Dube Maxwell Valentino Barnes Alston Thompson 30 Reis Simmons Knighton Tierney Mansally Salvaggione Fernandez Larentowicz Hamzagic Phelan Videira Conclusions: Is Nicol debating between Larentowicz and Videira in the center, possibly with Jeff at CB? Maxwell and Alston 60, The rest of the rookies go 30 and can't muster a goal against probly the Aztex bench. Not good for Fernandez, especially. Is Maxwell showing well? Badilla and Twellman out. Thought Twellman was fine, wonder what was up. Not looking good for Phelan, but Thompson getting more mins. Has Alston passed Tierney/Igwe?
Group 1: Reis Albright — Valentino — Heaps — Alston Nyassi — Joseph — Videira — Mansally Ralston — Dube Group 2: Simmons Albright — Barnes — Heaps — Tierney Maxwell — Joseph — Larentowicz — Thompson Ralston — Dube Group 3: Knighton Alston — Barnes — Valentino — Igwe Maxwell — Hamzagic — Phelan — Thompson Salvaggione — Fernandez mansally strickly playing left mid stands out to me. Barnes looks to be getting a chance to make a mark
IMO we have insufficient date upon which to draw any meaningful conclusions but it sure is nice to see names, alignments and know the team is being whipped into shape.
Even if we took the friendly half as serious, you STILL wouldn't beat us 5-0. Hey wait, a zero cut in half almost looks like a one. Yeah, you may win 4-1, but that's it. Take that. And hey, are there any home games memorial day weekend? I'll be in Austin catching up with about a dozen of my navy friends from the TR. Maybe I can catch a game. I'll be stinkin drunk, but stinkin drunk plus soccer is better than stinkin drunk sans soccer.
Other observations: Barnes auditioning at CB as some here predicted. All the goals occurring on Albright's watch - no surprise! Hamzagic trying CM rather than LM.
Agreed. We'll learn what experiments they are taking seriously during the friendlies. It will be interesting to hear how Alston fares at LB...if he can be effective out there he has a good shot at the starting job, I'd think. We should all be hoping and praying that Barnes turns out to be useful. What kind of player is Hamzagic, exactly? Is he competing with Phelan for a back-of-the-roster backup role? Is Hamzagic more of a defensive midfielder or is he more offensive-minded like Ralston or (perhaps, although we still haven't seen him) Videira? Can he play out wide at all?
"revseye Says: February 25th, 2009 at 5:18 pm A few guys sat out today’s scrimmages with slight knocks. Gabriel Badilla is still nursing a sore back, Mauricio Castro has a slight groin strain and Taylor Twellman is staying out of contact activities for a bit."
I know this is a precaution, but between him staying out of contact activities for a while now, and the news that he sat out some practices makes me very concerned. As someone else said, we're thin up top as it is...
So....we're thin in the back, thin up top, still missing a left sided midfielder and not really sure who our 'creative/attacking' midfielder is, but other than that we're OK??
yes. now, don't question Nicol... he's the master at the draft. as for castro... I think he's gonna have a real short leash. For all his work last year, he produced close to nothing. Because he's an experienced player, you'd think that the philosophy would be year 1- assimilate with the team. year 2-produce. I'd bet he needs to show his best stuff pretty quickly this year if he has a future with the team.
