Houston Dynamo to Present Newest Team Member on Tuesday, April 3

HOUSTON, TX (Friday, March 30, 2007) – The wait is over. The 2006 MLS Cup Champion Houston Dynamo are finally ready to introduce its newest team member: The Houston Dynamo Mascot.

The Houston Dynamo mascot will be introduced to the media at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 3 at the Children’s Zoo, inside the Houston Zoo. Specifically, the presentation will be done in the area between the prairie dog exhibit and the Coastal Zone.

Once its presentation concludes, the Houston Dynamo mascot will have a full agenda for the day, making appearances at J. Will Jones Elementary School , the Houston Children’s Hospital, and the Houston Children’s Museum.

The winning design of the Houston Dynamo mascot was selected among several submitted by students of the Houston Art Institute. The creators of the winning design will not only see their work come to life, but will also receive a $500 scholarship to apply directly to their tuition, and a prize package from the Houston Dynamo. Fans will see the new mascot in action by the team’s inaugural game of the 2007 season, which will take place on Sunday, April 8 against the Los Angeles Galaxy. Kickoff for this game is slated for 6:00 p.m. CT.

It's at the Zoo, it's a tiger. No foxes there but there is an Indochinese tiger.

For what it's worth, I can't stand mascots either...but my 5-year-old son just walked in as I was reading this thread and saw the pictures of all those old mascots and said "awwww...cool, dad!!! where is the Dynamo mascot?".

I explained to him that the Dynamo will be revealing their new mascot on Tuesday. He hopes it's an animal. He said "I love the animal ones. They're really cool". He thinks it should be a tiger because they're orange, black and white like the Dynamo.

All this without prompting - he likes to talk.

So obviously my kid likes mascots, as I'm sure lots of other kids do. So while mascots make most of us "grown-ups" sick you can't deny the effect they have on kids. And kids are the future of soccer, right? So let's not be too harsh about this mascot thing and realize that if we want to attract kids to the sport that a mascot is a good way of doing that.

OK, you've won me over with the argument that the mascot will attract the kids. So, who are the Dynamo Girls supposed to attract?

I'm glad to be wrong. I wanted it to be the fox and have Diesel as the name. If they want to have an event in the prairie dog area what's a sleuth to do?
