Commissioner to Announce New Initiatives Monday

NEW YORK (Tuesday, March 27, 2007) – Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber and Deputy Commissioner Ivan Gazidis will discuss the 2007 season and make several announcements, including some new competition initiatives, on a media teleconference call on Monday, April 2 at 1:30 p.m. ET. MLS opens its 12th season the weekend of April 7-8 with a slate of six games, starting with the Colorado Rapids hosting D.C. United in the first game in Dick’s Sporting Goods Park at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

IF it's the initiative we were briefed about in Florida two weeks ago, I think a lot of you folks are going to be happy. It'll address a lot of concerns that a lot of you have had over the years.

Of course, that'll give you fewer things to gripe about, but you'll have to soldier on.

(BTW, the conference call will supposedly be carried on MLSnet.com.)

It is typical that b4 a major announcement when nobody knows anything, the thread(s) devolve into base humor b/c... well... there's nothing to talk 'bout.

Then the announcement is about to be made or is being made, but there's 4-5 pages of complaints about the "technical issues" and/or ppl are pissed that a press conference is running late!!!

What will the International Soccer Community think?? This is sooo bush league. ESPN hates soccer. Promo/releg. AEG hates San Jose, DCU would never, ever be this amateur about something b/c that's not the way things are done in DC-landia, etc.

And then the announcement is made and a trashy, Jerry Springer thread becomes a great thread for analysis. From this thread, 2-3 other excellent threads are born out of areas of the game that will be affected, from facilities issues to personnel, etc.

And then there's the "This announcement has nothing to do w/ DC, but how is this going to affect DC b/c just so all you heathens know, DC is the premier organization of MLS" threads.

And that is how things work around here.

I know it's baseless speculation, but...

I'd have to think that part of the announcement would involve details about the qualifying for SuperLiga 2008 and maybe other tournaments (Sudamericana, Pan-Pacific). It would make sense IMHO to setup the details before the season begins regarding this kind of stuff.

During halftime of the USA-Ecuador match, Wynalda said approvingly that MLS was going to be "cutting the grass the same way in every stadium"...uh, yay?

Also, he said there was going to be an MLS anthem. At first I thought the EPL anthem was cheesy, but now I like it and I like the idea. Naturally, I have absolutely no faith that MLS can produce something that won't be horribly embarrassing. We've seen this before:

A) San Jose 14th team, (re)joins league in 2008
B) A set in stone list of how teams qualify for CONCACAF Champions Cup/SuperLiga/The Proposed Pan Asian Tournament
C) 2009 Expansion to 16 teams?
D) Conference Finals to be two-leg, total goals series?

or more amusingly
1) Any opposing player within 10 feet of David Beckham will be immediately red-carded.

Or perhaps other specific expansion plans (Philly, St. Louis, Phoenix, whatever) for 2008 or (more likely) 2009?

Though San Jose returning, given all the info out on it, seems like a likely subject for news offering next week.
