Agreed, but I wil say this: Dallas appears to have the cap space to pay him what he wants... and have a good chunk of change leftover.
As has been reported on 3rd Degree, this move opens up a roster spot for Colombian U20 player Juan Carlos Toja, having been signed at the end of February on loan from Independiente de Santa Fe. The only other non-draft pick-up this offseason by Dallas, at least to this point, was Adrian Serioux via a trade with Toronto. Before Toronto he was with Houston in 2006, his guaranteed salary bring $100,000.
However, going in the opposite direction have been Jeff Cassar (retired), Justin Moore (contract voided), Ronnie O'Brien (trade w/Toronto), Alex Smith (waived), Simo Valakari (option not picked up), Greg Vanney (trade w/Colorado), and now Richard Mulrooney.
In short,
Dallas have now moved four of their five highest paid players from 2006, with the total gauranteed salary for these players having been approx.
$913,000. The club also has a major allocation they're holding onto.
So they've got an allocation and a ton of money to play with, and unlike the Revolution, they continue to bring in trialists and follow-up on existing player interest, perhaps in mid/d-mid Pablo Ricchetti.
Makes for interesting times down in Dallas.
