Result: NEC Nijmegen 0 - 0 Cork City.

Cork City have managed to hold NEC to a scoreless draw in tonight’s game at De Goffert Stadion in Nijmegen. City had the best chance of the first half, despite defending very deeply for much of opening 45 minutes. George O’Callaghan took Cork City’s first corner on 19 minutes. Billy Woods‘ cracking header from the cross came back off the crossbar with ‘keeper Dennis Gentenaar beaten, and NEC managed to get it to safety.

Billy Woods had replaced John O’Flynn in a late change to the starting line-up. O’Flynn had been a minor doubt before the game, after picking up a knock in Malmo last weekend. Kevin Doyle partnered Neale Fenn up front, with Joe Gamble included on the bench. About 4,500 fans attended the game, about 200 of them travelling Cork City fans.

NEC won the first corner on 16 minutes, when the ball came off Liam Kearney’s boot. Saïd Boutahar took it from the left, and the ball came off Kevin Doyle for another corner. Pascal Heije’s resulting shot was well off-target.
Two minutes later, Neale Fenn’s attempted 30-yard chip sailed over.
Saïd Boutahar sent a shot wide after half an hour, after some good attacking play which brought the home crowd to life.

In the second half, Michael Devine pulled off a magnificent save on 82 minutes, when Björn van der Doelen’s cross was met with the right foot of substitute Romano Denneboom, making his debut for NEC. Two minutes later, Joe Gamble made his return to Cork City colours, replacing Billy Woods. Striker Frank Demouge should have scored for NEC from 12 yards, when Saïd Boutahar set up a shot for him with four minutes remaining, but his shot went wide.

Cork City, in an unusual all-white away strip, again represented the eircom League admirably in Europe, and will fancy their chances against the Dutch in next Sunday’s second-leg at Turner’s Cross (3.30pm)

im delighted, city once again doing the city and the eircom league proud.cant wait for next weeks game. :D

Well done to Cork for another excellent result.

As I recall, the third round of the Intertoto is when the bigger teams join in, so I hope they get a good draw. (Assuming they finish off Nijmegen.)

Do these games count towards the UEFA coefficients?

Bit dissapointing from the NEC side. They've put together a very potent team this year that has good chance to qualify for Europe coming season. The game was a bit too early pherhaps.

i think whoever wins plays nantes in the next round, saying that though one goal for nec next week at the cross will or would be a serious mountain for the lads to climb.......

i must admit it was funny seeing city play in the white kit last night,it looked like it was put together it about ten min's.nissan and the o'neill bit's looked like they were ironed on and funniest of all was the crest.it was just a football, real tacky, lol :D

nec's kit clashes with both our home kit(green) and our navy/red away kit.
you can see how bad it is here, check out the crest, lol :D

Unfortunately not. Some impressive results by Cork so far, but a 0-0 draw with no away goals is a very dangerous result going into the 2nd leg...
