Knowing already the 32 classified nations for *South Africa 2010*, what do you believe are the most...

Knowing already the 32 classified nations for South Africa 2010, what do you believe are the most important players that won't attend upon having been eliminated with their respective countries?, could you do a 23-man squad and an initial team?
ST ADEBAYOR, Emmanuel (Togo & Manchester City)
ST BERBATOV, Dimitar (Bulgaria & Manchester United)
ST IBRAHIMOVIC, Zlatan (Sweden & Barcelona)

Billy McGuinness knows about big wins. He knows more about big losses.

McGuinness' older brother, Tommy, contracted a parasitic infection in his brain when he was 3 years old. The illness confined him to a wheelchair for most of his life. Tommy died two years ago. He was 17.

McGuinness, a Lyons senior and the Chicago Tribune boys soccer player of the year, credits his parents, John and Irene, for guiding the family through a brief but appropriate grieving period.

"It was a lot of work to take care of him and we all pitched in," McGuinness said. "That changed my perspective on life. I look at life differently.

"I learned not to sweat the small stuff."

At least off the field. On it is a different story.

What happened on the field this season was pretty special for McGuinness. He scored the game-winning goal in overtime of the Class 3A state championship match against Lake Zurich and anchored a defense that allowed six goals during a 15-match winning streak to end the season.

"You couldn't write a better script for him or for the team," Lyons coach Paul Labbato said. "Defense is where he gives us just so much value.

"Winning a state title tested the whole idea of whether you can do so with his brand of defense leading the way."

McGuinness' brand revolves around never taking a play off, sweating the small stuff during a match.

The four-year starter is consumed with improving, even going to odd extremes looking for an edge.

That's where pingpong comes in.

"There are a lot of skills that go hand in hand with soccer," McGuinness said. "In pingpong, you have to be quick and have really solid reaction ability. You have to see the next shot unfolding and be able to anticipate."

His work ethic stems, in part, from his exposure to yet another sport -- swimming.

"You're basically torturing yourself," said McGuinness, who will choose between Princeton and Akron. "But it really helped strengthen my mental aspect when I switched solely to soccer. Between that and having some really good coaches, I bought into the idea of getting results in every training session."

A big part of his "mental aspect," though, comes from his childhood. Comes from his brother and his mother and his father. Comes from his perspective.

"They made sure that (the grieving) process didn't last too long," McGuinness said of his parents. "I'm now more able to take a step back and acknowledge that soccer is just a game. There are much bigger problems in the world besides what happens on a soccer field."

Since the whole academy thing started I've been very interested to hear more about what and who exactly we have. Good to finally hear about a player of ours.

It doesn't state specifically in the article but according to the HS boards he is on the U18 team so it's great we have'em. Also part of the Lyons Township HS team that won the state championship. You always hear about guys in the Red Bulls Academy, Galaxy, etc. Good to finally hear about one of our guys. Also nice to know we have some of the top talent in the state.

I used to enjoy watching this tournament back in the '90s. Sure, the visiting teams never took it completely seriously, but it was a great event and a good chance for the US to get match practice against some international sides.

Is it worth bringing back? Probably not in the original format given the crowded international calendar. But it might be a good competition for a MLS-based "USA A" team to get some practice together against top opposition, push their case for inclusion in the first-choice international squad.

Just came across these today. They are listed by pot and assume that CONCACAF is grouped with AFC. USA is 100 to 1 and has the best odds in their pot. South Africa is obviously the inferior team in Pot A. There are two teams in Pot B (Netherlands and Portugal) that are clearly better than the other six. From Pot D, the Ivory Coast is the one team I'd hate to be paired with although Chile and Ghana would be no picnic either.

Pot A (seeded teams)
Brazil 4.9 to 1
Spain 4.9
England 7.4
Argentina 10
Germany 13
Italy 16
France 18
South Africa 109

Pot B (UEFA)
Netherlands 17 to 1
Portugal 20
Serbia 84
Greece 139
Denmark 140
Slovenia 199
Switzerland 270
Slovakia 330

Pot C (CONCACAF + AFC)

As some of you must know, Cuauhtémoc Blanco received today the "Premio Nacional del Deporte" (Sports National Award), a price awared by Mexican Government to the best athletes of the year.

Was it deserved? I think it wasn't, here are my arguments:

So, I've been doing some snooping around the interwebs with my friend Google. I am looking for the squad listing of the players who competed in the 1991 Final, specifically the roster of players for the 1991 Richardson Rockets (later became the Mid-City Flyers and then the Dallas Rockets).

I have found NO squad listings anywhere. I have found the names of 4 or 5 players, but that is it so far.

Any of you have a source(s) to suggest for me?

FakeSigi posted on this news (http://www.fakesigi.com/2009/11/omfg-im-prophet.html) earlier today,...

FakeSigi posted on this news earlier today, and I just read this article on the NY Times website. Reading this brought back the sickening feeling I had when the Juventus et al. news broke in 2006. Even though, being an Inter fan, I'd always thought Juve were a collection of miserable cheating bastards on the pitch, when it became clear that they and ACM and others were miserable cheating bastards off the pitch, I just wanted to throw up. I'm not as utterly bummed-out about this new scandal as I was in 2006, probably because I'm not as naive as I was then about this kind of thing, but if this leads to some evidence about extensive match-fixing in Champions League and Europa League fixtures, then . . . ugh.

I've been putting off picking up Declan Hill's book, but now I suppose it's time to move it to the top of my library list.
