Friday Rumblings: Boro keeps on losing stars, Chelsea stuck with what they got...maybe

A couple tidbits for the Holiday weekend:

Image:...

A couple tidbits for the Holiday weekend:

It looked as if Middlesbrough - near the beginning of the transfer window - was going to hold on to its most prized assets as they prepared for life once again in the Championship. The last two weeks have been an eye-opener, however, with Sanli Tuncay and Robert Huth heading back to the EPL with Stoke City, Stewart Downing finally getting his move away from the club to Aston Villa, and Afonso Alves, ultimately a huge bust after a high-profile move from Heerenveen, to Qatar for a payday with Al-Sadd. Gareth Southgate was able to get a little compensation for the three but Boro will have to fight their way back up to the EPL without a true talismanic figure. The job has already fallen on promising young midfielder Adam Johnson who has already done his share to score 4 goals in 5 games so far as Boro sits 4th in the Championship with 10 points out of 5 games. If Boro don't get out of the Championship this season and after Johnson's public pleads for Boro's stars to stay, you can expect the 22-year old to follow the footsteps of fellow winger and Middlesbrough product Downing, signing for a top-half EPL squad.

A quick little run down of the week:

Chelsea have been hit with a ban due to their approach and capture of Racing Lens' product Gael Kukuta a couple years ago. The ban consists of no transfers for the next two transfer windows making January 2011 the first the Blues could dip back in the market. A lengthy appeal process, however, could allow Chelsea to at least have the first half of this January to do some business but, all in all, it's not good for a club that has started this season on such a promising note. Do they have the pieces to lessen the blow?

In analyzing the summer transfer window, can you believe the quality that Manchester City has added to their roster? Joleon Lescott - one of the top three defenders last season in EPL play, Emmanuel Adebayor - already, after only 4 games, has shown his worth, Gareth Barry - top notch midfielder, Kolo Toure, veteran Sylvinho, and some guy named Carlos Tevez. The upgrade is sickening but it sure will make for an impressive and interesting EPL campaign. Talent alone doesn't make a team though - can they mimic the cohesion of Chelsea or United?

So after over 50 goals between the two last season and title defense campaign well under way for VfL Wolfsburg, Edin Dzeko and Grafite (both linked with high-profile moves away from the club) have started 2009-2010 at a pretty slow clip. Obafemi Martins - joining from relegated Newcastle - has picked up the slack but between the two, in four matches, you have two goals. The addition of Martins to a duo that were 1-2 in the scoring tables last season might cause more harm than good in the long run but Wolfsburg's hand was forced when Edin Dzeko spent the last month of the transfer window trying to secure a "dream" move to AC Milan before signing a long term contract for four more years. Kind of like Stuttgart a couple years back, I don't think we're going to see a repeat.

In USL-1 play, the Portland Timbers unbeaten streak endedat home last night at 24 games after a brace from Errol McFarlane (the winner in injury time of course) gave Rochester a 2-1 win. McFarlane - a Trinidad and Tobago international - only joined a couple months ago after a globetrotting career that brought him to the States for college ball, Iceland, Lebanon, back to Trinidad and Tobago, and now back to the US with the Rhinos and former teammate Brent Sancho. It was over four months of solid ball for the Timbers and their run - though not all wins - puts them in prime position for a deep playoff run. The heart of their run was former Kansas City midfielder/forward Ryan Pore and forward Mandjou Keita who have combined for over half of Portland's goals this season.

MLS Newcomers, Week 24: Big Man Pablo Takes Number One

*Image: http://www.deseretnews.com/photos/midres/1516857.jpg *

*
1. Pablo Campos (Real Salt...

1. Pablo Campos (Real Salt Lake)
Many were thinking - especially after their recent trades - that Chivas USA would snap out of their funk and move on back up the Western Conference standings. Not the case early on in the week and certainily not the case to close it out. Pablo Campos was the man behind the continuation of the Goats' nasty trend. His goal right before halftime helped open up the floodgates. It was - surprisingly - his first in an RSL uniform. He didn't let that settle, putting up the game winner vs. Kansas City over the weekend to pull RSL back to .500.

2. Stefan Frei (Toronto FC)

His play in a 0-0 stalemate with Seattle at home was admirable (as a clean sheet is a clean sheet, any way you can get it) but this is more a reward for consistency. Sure, the Swiss shot stopper has made mistakes but - as a rookie - he's about as promising as the goalkeeper's get in this league. Is he still in the running for Rookie of the Year?

3. Julien Baudet (Colorado)

Broken arm and all, Bauden came off the bench to sub in for an injured Cory Gibbs early on vs. Houston and made his first significant time in almost a month count. The Rapids are gaining ground on the Western Conference leaders and Baudet's first MLS goal had a lot to do with that. A 13th minute header did the trick and with Gibbs out and new boy Drew Moor coming in (the 1-0 win over Houston was Ugo Ihemelu's last game with the club) from FC Dallas, Baudet's run in the first team should continue.

4. Dejan Jakovic (DC United)

It almost feels as if I have been ignoring him all season but the truth is, although the results haven't always been there for United (especially tonight), Jakovic has been a welcomed addition to DC's backline. Maybe he was overshadowed by the early play of Rodney Wallace and Chris Pontius but without Jakovic, United's backline would be in shambles. His play in this past week's 1-0 win over Eastern Conference foes Chicago justifies that.

5. Omar Gonzalez (Los Angeles)

Somebody tell me how I keep this rookie off this list? It's almost impossible the way he was been playing the past couple months. This past week - as the Galaxy overcame Chivas USA in a fiery Superclasico - Gonzalez provided an assist on David Beckham's gamewinning goal.

6. Sebastian Le Toux (Seattle)

He did everything but score vs. Toronto FC but the Frenchman couldn't end the home scoring drought for the Sounders and their fans. Le Toux was nice enough to carry over his form to help the Sounders secure their first silverware as a Major League Soccer franchise. His assist to Roger Levesque essentially put the nail in the coffin in tonight's Open Cup win over DC United.

7. Sam Cronin (Toronto FC)

Cronin's play - just like Frei's - vs. the Sounders wasn't particularly memorable but his season so far is. It's easy to forget the midfielder is in fact a rookie. He has played primarily as a holding midfielder but his versatility has shone through, manning the wing on occasions and pushing forward as the Reds try and make their first postseason ever. Thanks to Cronin, Frei, and the two Gambian finds - they have a hell of a chance.

8. Gregg Berhalter (Los Angeles)

Berhalter makes the list yet again for a shutout, of course, but more importantly for his containment of Maykel Galindo. Galindo hasn't been particularly dangerous this season but Berhalter was perfectly positioned most of them game and was able to minimize the number of times Galindo burned the veteran with his speed.

9. Kevin Alston (New England)

That's three in a row for the Revs and once again the trio of Barnes, Alston, and Osei have a good deal to do with that. He had a couple of mistakes early on, especially in an all-around pitiful first half from the Revs. New England, however, were able to count on Alston's pace late in the game to counter the tough San Jose strike corps led by a late sub - but quick hit - Quincy Amarinkwa.

10. Andre Luiz (San Jose)

Andre Luiz had a great game in the midfield for the Earthquakes, despite a San Jose loss. He probably deserves to be higher on the list if it weren't for one thing. Luiz's defensive mistake allowed Steve Ralston to grab his 7th goal of the season and put the Revs ahead. Since joining the Quakes, Andre Luiz has been steady in the midfield along with fellow newcomer Ramon Sanchez.

OVERALL [pts/wk]

1. Freddy Montero (Seattle - 70 pts.)
2. Donovan Ricketts (Los Angeles - 59 pts.)
3. Omar Gonzalez (Los Angeles - 48 pts.)
4. Chris Pontius (DC United Soccer News Topics - 47 pts.)

Friday Rumblings: Flying Dutchmen and a Couple Draws

The* transfer deadline* is fast approaching and some big teams are scrambling to get deals done....

The transfer deadline is fast approaching and some big teams are scrambling to get deals done. Everton - still trying to figure out how to fill the gap Joleon Lescott's exit to Man City has left - went for a temporary solution in Sylvain Distin. Despite rumored and probably a bit exaggerated Manchester United interest in oft-injured Real Madrid winger Arjen Robben, Bayern Munich settled the uncertainty by swooping in to grab the Dutchman. Real Madrid wasn't done shedding Dutchmen just yet as they also sent Ajax product Wesley Sneijder to Inter Milan. The rumors say a five-year deal has been reached for a surprisingly young, 25-year old Sneijder. Yesterday, there were several EPL moves as Blackburn lost one to gain one. The Rovers grabbed Tottenham wantaway Pascal Chimbonda after losing Stephen Warnock, who has earned his attention, to Aston Villa. Stoke City, however, raided now Championship club Middlesbrough for two of their stars in Sunli Tuncay and Robert Huth (probably one of the best moves of the whole window). The action will undoubtedly continue as there are only 3 days that remain.

For those of you that missed it - Bob Bradley released the 24-man roster to be considered for their September5th and September 9th clashes with El Salvador and Trinidad & Tobago respectively. Even with his quick, productive start with 1860 Munich, Kenny Cooper couldn't grab a call-up. Instead, Robbie Findley gets the call-up and the possibility of his first cap in a World Cup qualifier. Not sure how much he deserves it. Doubt he'll play but it's nice to see Clarence Goodson get a nod and go figure, Torres is now out of the doghouse.

GOALKEEPERS (2):Brad Guzan (Aston Villa: 5/3 SO), Tim Howard (Everton FC: 12/7 SO)

DEFENDERS (8):Carlos Bocanegra (Rennes: 22/3), Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA, 2/0), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover: 19/0), Jay DeMerit (Watford: 3/0), Clarence Goodson (IK Start: 1/0), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew: 2/0), Oguchi Onyewu (AC Milan: 17/1), Jonathan Spector (West Ham: 2/0)

MIDFIELDERS (8):Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake: 0/0), Michael Bradley (Borussia Mönchengladbach: 11/4), Ricardo Clark (Houston Dynamo: 6/0), Clint Dempsey (Fulham: 18/4), Benny Feilhaber (AGF Aarhus: 2/0), Stuart Holden (Houston Dynamo: 1/0), Robbie Rogers (Columbus Crew: 0/0), José Francisco Torres (Pachuca: 5/0)

FORWARDS (6):Jozy Altidore (Hull City: 9/5), Conor Casey (Colorado Rapids: 5/0), Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo: 16/6), Charlie Davies (FC Sochaux: 3/2), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy: 31/11), Robbie Findley (Real Salt Lake: 0/0)

And finally, the two major European championships are set to kick off their group stages and the fixtures were released. First up, Champions League:

GROUP A: Bayern Munich, Juventus, Bordeaux, Maccabi Haifa (Can Gourcuff get the Les Girondins out of this group?)

GROUP B: Manchester United, CSKA Moscow, Besiktas, VfL Wolfsburg (A favorable draw for United but Dzeko and Grafite are still around for the reigning champions of Germany)

GROUP C: AC Milan, Real Madrid, Marseille, FC Zurich (Maybe Milan and Real will beat each other up so much that Marseille can sneak through)

GROUP D: Chelsea, Porto, Atletico Madrid, APOEL (Don't get the Hulk angry, you won't like him when he's angry - Porto over Chelsea?)

GROUP E: Liverpool, Lyon, Fiorentina, Debreceni (Lisandro Lopez is Lyon's newest star but can he get by the Reds and Fiorentina?)

GROUP F: Barcelona, Inter Milan, Dynamo Kiev, Rubin Kazan (Alright, somebody staged this - Barca and Inter, Milan and Real...not bad)

GROUP G: FC Sevilla, Rangers, Vfb Stuttgart, Unirea Urziceni (Edu and Beasley are looking good to get through here, maybe)

GROUP H: Arsenal, AZ Alkmaar, Olympiakos, Standard Liege (Darkhorse Alkmaar just signed Rasmus Elm, he's good)

And how about the Europa League?

GROUP A: Ajax, Anderlecht, Dinamo Zagreb, FC Timisoara (Anderlecht got their ass handed to them in Champions League qualifying but they should do alright here)

GROUP B: Valencia, Lille, Slavia Prague, Genoa (Genoa were the surprises of Serie A last season but have since lost some firepower, still got what it takes?)

GROUP C: HSV, Celtic, Hapoel Tel Aviv, Rapid Vienna (Vienna went through at Brad Guzan and Brad Friedel's expense, I hope they finish dead last)

GROUP D: Sporting Lisbon, Heerenveen, Hertha Berlin, FK Ventspils (I want Heerenveen to go through only because I want there to be a chance of an Elm brother duel - Viktor plays for Heerenveen, Rasmus - younger - plays for AZ now)

GROUP E: Roma, FC Basel, Fulham, CSKA Sofia (Not a very easy group for Dempsey, Johnson and Fulham, especially after AS Roma's performance in the qualifying rounds)
GROUP F: Panathinaikos, Galatasaray, Dinamo Bucharest, Sturm Graz (Call me crazy but I see Panathinaikos as a contender this year)

GROUP G: Villarreal, Lazio, Levski Sofia, Red Bull Salzburg (Red Bull Salzburg called and they want Ernst Oebster back, Lazio and Villarreal will prevail)

GROUP H: Steaua Bucharest, Fenerbahce, FC Twente, Sheriff (I'm rooting for Steve McClaren and Twente on this one but Fener have been strong so far this season)

GROUP I: Benfica, Everton, AEK Athens, BATE Borisov (On paper this looks like an easier group for Timmy Howard and the Toffees but without Lescott, nothing's easy anymore)

GROUP J: Shakhtar, Club Brugge, Partizan Belgrade, Toulouse (Andre-Pierre Gignac is going to tear this group up but not before Shakhtar's Brazilians do so first)

GROUP K: PSV, FC Copenhagen, Sparta Prague, CFR Cluj (Should be pretty easy for PSV to get out of this group...but it's easier said than done)

GROUP L: Werder Bremen, Austria Vienna, Athletic Bilbao, Nacional (Is there really a Group L? And K? And J?)

MLS Newcomers, Week 23: Revs rev it up and the rookies lead the way

*Image: http://web.mlsnet.com/images/2009/04/15/mXELpePg.jpg *

*
1. Darrius Barnes (New...

1. Darrius Barnes (New England)

Forget his own goal given as simply a consolation goal in the last five minutes of a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake. The Revs have been on a tear since the All-Star break and you have to point out the fact that two rookies and a newcomer are the ones manning an impressive backline (kind of like the Galaxy with Gonzalez, DeLaGarza, and Berhalter). New England should have had two shutouts in week 23 - a 1-0 squeeze by Seattle and the dominant win over Salt Lake and Barnes was all over the place.

2. Albert Celades (New York)

I don't really remember the last time a Red Bull made it onto this list but Celades' passing and vision vs. FC Dallas helped keep the Bulls defense from shooting themselves in the foot once again. Celades and Angel combined for a pretty chip as the Colombian striker finally got the service he had been waiting for all season. How must he feel about this current season? Regardless, Celades showed that If he was back next season and the ship was still floating, he could act as a pinpoint distributor in the midfield. Two assists as the Red Bulls continue their efforts to avoid the worst season in league history.

3. Donovan Ricketts (Los Angeles)

The Galaxy have 9 more points than last season at this time. How many of those points would have disappeared if it weren't for the play of Donovan Ricketts? With the Jamaican in net and the over-performing backline in front of him, the Galaxy could break the club record of 11 shutouts on a season. Los Angeles need consistency last season and there was none to be found. At least on the defensive side of things in 2009, that consistency has arrived.

4. Maicon Santos (Chivas USA)

Forget last night's pitiful performance by the Goats and focus on Maicon Santos' debut last week vs. Toronto FC. With both the Brazilian and Jesus Padilla playing their first game with the club, the Goats entered their match vs. TFC needing a win to right the ship. Maicon - an imposing presence - provided the beautiful through ball that gave Kljestan one of his two goals (about time Sacha). The slide was temporarily halted but with their laundry list of injuries, it's uncertain whether or not reinforcements can help enough to keep from falling out of playoff contention (and yesterday's 4-0 loss to RSL is indicative of that).

5. Gregg Berhalter (Los Angeles)

You really can only say it so much. The Galaxy's defense has been incredible this season - especially compared to last. Week-in, week-out, it's the same guys in the back providing the Galaxy offense with a chance to win. Two shutouts in Week 23 certainly confirmed that. Berhalter's nurturing of Omar Gonzalez this season has allowed the Gals to continue their quest to end a 3-year playoff drought and possibly even compete for an MLS Cup.

6. Emmanuel Osei (New England)

Osei was massive in the Revs 1-0 win over the Seattle Sounders mid-week. Even when assistant coach Paul Mariner was ejected and the goalkeeping coach took over, Osei seemed to keep his charges intact and ready for a Sounders onslaught. It's not easy to win a game at Qwest and the Revs were able to do so.

7. Luis Angel Landin (Houston)

He entered in the 76th minute vs. Seattle and had a nice impact almost finding Stuart Holden for the gamewinner. The DP should get a bit more time in Week 24 but if his standing ovation upon entrance at Robertson Stadium is any indication, there's a lot of expectations behind the striker.

8. Kevin Alston (New England)

How do you not include the player who not once - but twice - cleared a ball off of the goal line in the Revolution's 1-0 win over Western Conference contenders Seattle. Alston - despite an injury early on - has rebounded after some time off, regained his starting spot, and joins a host of surprisingly good rookie defenders this season.

9. Freddie Ljungberg (Seattle)

Low blood sugar couldn't keep Freddie down for long as he was all over the place for Seattle in their Sunday clash with Houston. They tied but the Sounders had to be happy to have their DP back in the line-up after he missed a couple games. As if to prove he was already up to speed, Ljungberg provided the first real chance of the game when he beat both Bobby Boswell and Wade Barrett and testing Kasey Keller. With Montero returning this week from suspension, the Sounders might finally be back at full strength.

10. Rauwshan McKenzie (Kansas City)

They lost once again as Peter Vermes continued as interim caretaker of the lost Wizards. McKenzie, however, has been a nice surprise for Kansas City and he's someone that can undoubtedly help them in the future.
Jozy Altidore's Hull City got their first win of the young season with a 1-0 win over Bolton. And Altidore, after a long wait and some complications, got his chance to play. Coming on in the 59th minute for striker Caleb Folan, Altidore immediately made an impact providing an acrobatic assist to fellow newbie Kamel Ghilas for the gamewinner. If his EPL debut was any indication of what to expect this season from Altidore, there's a lot to get excited about. The Tigers will need him and a couple other heroes if they want to keep out of that relegation battle this season. Below is a compilation of Altidore's Hull City debut.
Elsewhere in England, scary, scary news. West Ham defender Calum Davenport is in surgery and serious condition after two assailants apparently entered his house and assaulted him and his mother. The two attackers are now under arrest with many assuming possible attempted murder. Davenport was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and other details have yet to be released. His mother is also in serious condition but both Calum and his mother's injuries are said not to be life-threatening. A robbery gone wrong?

Sochaux's Charlie Davies grabbed the start in a 2-0 away loss to newly promoted Montpellier. Not even Davies could keep the Ligue One new boys from running rampant as they stay unbeaten now in three games. Carlos Bocanegra kept Marseille's charged offense from doing too much damage as Rennes fought off Mamadou Niang and OM. Former Rennes midfielder Stephane Mbia saw his first action against his former teammates in the draw. Last but not least, every season there seems to beat at least one newly promoted squad that surprises Ligue One. Make that two this season as Boulogne has joined Montepellier in the surprise category with 2 wins out of their first games. Their most recent win, a 1-0 win over Les Verts, kept Saint-Etienne near the bottom of the table (kind of like last season).

MLS Newcomers, Week 22: The Sounders Return, Should the Gunners Take Notice?

The Galaxy prevailed yesterday and Seattle/New England is going on right now but neither have...

The Galaxy prevailed yesterday and Seattle/New England is going on right now but neither have anything to do with Week 22. Zakuani was the star of the week as Seattle dismantled the tough Galaxy defense and regained some momentum.

1. Steve Zakuani (Seattle)

He has tied it up with Chris Pontius as top Rookie of the Year candidate and his play vs. the Galaxy warrants that jump. Although he calmed down a bit in the second half, Zakuani's pace and acceleration troubled the Galaxy's backline. It was Zakuani's third goal of the season and surprisingly, the Sounders first goal in 335 minutes.

2. Eric Brunner (Columbus)

That's now 20 games at home and the Crew can't seem to do anything wrong. What's even more impressive is that the Crew keep winning without the help of Guillermo Barros Schelloto (who came on with only a couple ticks left). Brunner continues to be a huge part of the success, developing into the player that made him one of the bigger prospects during the 2008 preseason.

3. Fredy Montero (Seattle)

With Freddie Ljungberg out, Sounders fans were hoping the other Fredy could deliver in their away clash with Los Angeles. The little Colombian replied with an opportunistic clincher and his 10th goal of the season. Montero was relatively quiet most of the game but given the chance, he pounced.

4. O'Brian White (Toronto FC)

His first professional goal must have been an emotional one. After a season ending injury that put White out for the rest of his last year at UConn, he was forced to watch his stock fall at the draft with nothing he could do about it. Toronto took him at a bargain, nursed him to fitness, and watched as he provided his first strike for the Reds to help beat Eastern Conference foes DC United 2-0. Created his chance and delivered, a nose for goal.

5. Chukwudi Chijindu (Chivas USA)

A beautiful curling ball from Chijindu that found Maykel Galindo was the game-winning assist in a 2-0 Goats win over the pitiful Red Bulls. The Chijindu/Galindo tandem worked well in New York and their production allowed Chivas USA to end their club record scoreless streak.

6. Sam Cronin (Toronto FC)

Cronin was all over the place in Toronto's 2-0 win over DC. On the right, in the middle, box to box. It was an impressive performance for the rookie and - in all honesty - with the nature of his position, Cronin has been oft overlooked this season (Bradley noticed, capping him). Cronin, Frei, and White mixed with Sanyang, Attakora, and Gomez make for an exciting, youthful future for the Reds. It was Cronin's pinpoint cross that gave DeRo the chance to open up the scoring.

7. Michael Lahoud (Chivas USA)

Lahoud has had limited playing time this season but he was able to grab his first professional assist in Chivas USA's win over New York. It was the former Demon Deacon's long, pacy run into the Red Bulls penalty box that opened up the space for him to slot it across to a wide open Eduardo Lillingston. Lahoud took out fellow rookie Chijindu and essentially picked up where he left off.

8. Emmanuel Gomez (Toronto FC)

It was hard to pick between Gomez and the younger Sanyang but Chris Cummins talked up the changes at the backline for the match against DC and they proved worthy. Gomez and Nana Attakora dealt perfectly with DC's potent offense as six rookies took the field for the Toronto and the Reds prevailed. Can they do it again vs. a Chivas USA team that might be back to winning?

9. Leo Gonzalez (Seattle)

He has been thrown right into the starting line-up and from what it looks like, Gonzalez has the chops to strengthen the Sounders left-side. The 28-year old Costa Rican international did well for his second start with the club in MLS play. Likes to get forward and has the pace to contend with some of the faster attacks in the league.

10. Eduardo Lillingston (Chivas USA)

He's a poacher and Michael Lahoud/Gerson Mayen did all the work but you can't ignore the fact Lillingston has 7 goals for the Goats this season. Don't get me wrong, this is definitely a guy you want on your team - any chance he gets, he'll put it away. Just don't expect him to create the chance himself.

New faces: Walter Garcia (DF-New York), Jesus Padilla (FW-Chivas USA), David Habarugira (MF-DC United), Yamith Cuesta (DF-Chivas USA), Fabio da Silva (MF-San Jose), Luis Landin (FW-Houston)

...these guys did just that.

...

...these guys did just that.

1. Charlie Davies (Sochaux)

If you read Greg Seltzer's very recent interview with Davies, you'll see his goal is to be a striker that Sochaux - relegation battlers last season in Ligue One - can't live without. With both goals in Sochaux's 3-2 loss to defending champs Bordeaux, he has certainly already made an impression. Scoring a goal in Mexico will do wonders for the confidence. Sochaux, last season, were mostly stuck right in the thick of a relegation battle and Davies contributions will have to yield wins if the want to avoid that yet again.

2. Eljero Elia (HSV)

It was fellow debutante - and Eredivisie veteran - Marcus Berg who opened up his Eredivise scoring account but Elia started and patrolled the wings for a healthy looking Hamburg squad. There was worry that he wouldn't be ready for the new season after an injury late in July but Elia put those rumors to rest with spirited play vs. Dortmund. The former Twente man honed his skills with McClaren's club before opting to try his luck in the Bundesliga.

3. Thomas Vermaelen (Arsenal)

Even after only the second game, if Arsene Wenger is singing your praises then you have done something right. The 23-year old centre back scored on his debut and played remarkably well vs. Celtic in the Champions League and could wind up being the bargain of the offseason.

4. Emmanuel Adebayor (Manchester City)

He didn't wait too long (all of three minutes) to put his mark on the game as Adebayor - despite a ratherlively match from Blackburn - made sure Manchester City didn't start the season playing catch up. A questionable preseason led to many having their doubts but his strike from distance vs. Blackburn was all that was needed to quell the masses.

5. Darren Bent (Sunderland)

He put up a goal yesterday on Chelsea only to see the Black Cats fall 3-1 in the end but two goals in two games bodes well for the striker. It's clear though that when he is expected to score, he does so and he needs to be the head striker if he's going to make a solid impact game in and game out. Two goals in two games.

6. Erwin Hoffer (Napoli)

A rather easy goal in a comfortable 3-0 win for Napoli over minnows Salernitana in the Third Round of the Coppa Italia isn't as fashionable as say...a gamewinning strike to beat AC Milan...but it's a start no one would turn down with their new club. Hoffer - after destroying the Austrian Bundesliga last season - is off to new challenges as exciting title challengers Napoli won the race for the Austrian.

7. Sebastian Bassong (Tottenham)

The move happened pretty quickly and it was Newcastle boss Alan Shearer that recommended Bassong to Harry Redknapp for the newest season. Redknapp obliged, took Bassong in, and immediately reaped the benefits. The defender was able to power home a brilliant header to ensure Liverpool didn't start the season on the right foot. Could Bassong's signing be a change in the seemingly neverending underperforming nature of the Spurs.

8. Gregory Thil (Boulogne)

Okay, okay, he's not a transfer-in or Bosman pick-up, but Boulogne is the relegation favorite this season in Ligue One after having finished third in Ligue Two grabbing that last promotion spot. His brace allowed the new-boys to grab their first Ligue One win over last season's surprises Grenoble.

9. Juan Arango (Borussia Monchengladbach)

Gladbach will be happy to start this season in the Bundesliga off on the right foot - taking four points out of their first two matches. Their success as of late has been spurred on by the former Mallorca attacking midfielder as Gladbach try to escape the pressures of a relegation battle this season.

10. Paul Alo'o Efoulou (Nancy)

A Ligue Two stud, Nancy decided to take a chance on the 25-year old in the offseason and it has already paid its dividends for the whole year. Nancy beat up on an AS Monaco squad that looks just as impotent as last season. It wasn't positive Efoulou would be fit for Nancy's second match of the season but the Cameroonian stayed fit and delivered.

EPL Starlets, Part II: From Lucas to Vokes

Part II...
*
Lucas Leiva - Liverpool*

Image:...

Part II...

Lucas Leiva - Liverpool

He's a bit old compared to everyone else on this list but the Gremio product has a huge role to fill in the Liverpool line-up this season. It showed today in their loss to Tottenham. The 22-year old midfielder must help replace Xabi Alonso or be replaced as the Reds look to mount a title challenge this season. The Brazilian had his ups and downs last season but should share significant time with new signing Aquilani, Stevie Gerrard, and Yossi Benayoun. Can he give the consistency Rafa is looking for?

Vladimir Weiss - Manchester City

Just a little bit of roster turnover in the Eastlands this offseason...After Stephen Ireland impressed last season, Mark Hughes has to have his eye on another youngster to breakthrough this season and that became more of a reality when Elano bolted for Galatasaray at the beginning of August. Weiss - a small but quick and creative force - was expected to test the fringe of the squad this season but with the Elano exit, it puts him right up there with Michael Johnson, Stephen Ireland, and Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Zoran Tosic - Manchester United

United will depend a bit more on youth this season as the title defense - once again - begins. Many are worried they don't have enough veterans on the squad as names like It's doubtful we see a lot more of Federico Macheda but on the wings, there will be a battle for playing time and Zoran Tosic - quickly becoming a Serbian star on the international front - could prevail. Several youngsters made a name for themselves in the preseason and I wouldn't be surprised to see the likes of a Ritchie de Laet or Tom Cleverley getting some time too.

Matt Ritchie - Portsmouth

He's 19 and coming off a successful year-long loan stint last season with Dag & Red, Paul Hart will look to get Ritchie some first-team time this season. He proved that by having him on his opening day bench in the 1-0 loss to Fulham. As last season's Portsmouth Youth player of the year, there are expectations. There's a chance Sven Goran Eriksson's new club Notts County might come for Ritchie on loan.

Ryan Shotton - Stoke City

The big 20-year old defender could fill the gap that is expected to be left open by last season's revelation Ryan Shawcross. He wasn't in the Potters opening day squad but will probably play a big role during the rest of the season. Stoke City through and through, Tony Pulis thinks highly of the kid as one for the near future.

Fraizer Campbell - Sunderland

Seemingly hijacked by the Black Cats, the 21-year old Campbell can't wait to get his chance on the big stage after years trying to break through into the Manchester United frontline. The deceivingly strong and pacy striker should complement Kenwyne Jones well as Sunderland try to move the EPL totem pole but his limited and disappointing time on loan with Tottenham last season might still be fresh on his mind.

Danny Rose - Tottenham

The 19-year old should get the call this season for an extended run in the first team. The Spurs are generally rich with young talent that ends up underperforming but it's expected that Rose and fellow starlet John Bostock should feature prominently this season under Harry Redknapp. A win over Liverpool is a good way to start the season but Rose didn't participate. Hampered by injuries since joining the Spurs a couple years ago from Leeds United, Rose has still done enough to warrant a budding international career having seen time - a little bit - at the U21 European Championship.

Junior Stanislas - West Ham United

Gianfranco Zola showed last season he has knack for uncovering the talent - Collison, Nsereko, Tomkins come to mind - and this season will be no different. The 19-year Stanislas impressed with Southend in FA Cup play before earning some time with the first team late in the season where he struck twice in only 9 appearances. Zola should expect more for him

James McCarthy - Wigan

The newest Scottish wonderkid has a lot of expectations heading into his first EPL season. Joining from Hamilton Academical, where McCarthy almost single-handedly kept them afloat, the 18-year old picked Wigan over a huge list of suitors including Everton and Liverpool. The reigning Scottish Young Player of the Year, McCarthy has been a starter since the age of 15 and it's likely Roberto Martinez will use him sparingly this season as he adjusts to the rigors of the EPL.

Sam Vokes - Wolves

There's a host of young talent on the Premier League newboys but only one has carved out quite the international career for himself. The 19-year old Vokes recently grabbed his first international goal for the Welsh national team vs. Montenegro on August 12th. He is hoping he can translate his international success into EPL starts as he contends for a spot up front with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, now injured Chris Iwelumo, and club record signing Kevin Doyle.

EPL Starlets, Part I: From Altidore to Wilshere

With very little pomp and circumstance heading into the 2009-2010 EPL season (no team previews, no...

With very little pomp and circumstance heading into the 2009-2010 EPL season (no team previews, no predictions), each and every season there seems to be at least one youngster that breaks through and rolls like a Kenwyne Jones (Sunderland) or Lee Cattermole (Wigan). Here is CHI's take on those poised to do so in the new season. Part II to come tomorrow or Sunday.

Jack Wilshere - Arsenal

It has been his preseason play - especially during the Emirates Cup - that has the pundits adoring the 17-year old midfielder. One of the few bright young British talents actually on Fabio Capello's radar for World Cup duty but in order to reach that goal, he has to furnish a breakout season with the Gunners this year. Injuries to Samir Nasri and Tomas Rosicky (when is he EVER healthy) make it a good possibility we'll see Wilshere early on.

Fabian Delph - Aston Villa

Only 19, Delph now inherits with the expectations of a now-departed Gareth Barry. Big shoes to fill and very little time to get acclimated to Premier League life. The young midfielder was sensational for Leeds last season as they fell just short of promotion and with his passing ability and good decision-making (even at such a young age), Delph should make a splash in his first big-league season.

James O'Shea - Birmingham City

The flow from the Irish Premier League continues as Alex McLeish looks for a second star - in two seasons - from the Irish breeding ground. Citing Keith Fahey as a main catalyst in their promotion push last season, the Blues boss is very high on O'Shea though he's not expected to break through right away. He has featured in the Irish U-21 side but I'm pretty sure we can't expect a Mauro Zarate out of him.

Nikola Kalinic and Franco Di Santo - Blackburn

Two highly rated attackers that should get significant first team chances on the season. Kalinic is expected to eventually replace the hole left by the exit of Roque Santa Cruz. At 21, he joins from the Czech first division is one of the most highly-touted Croatian strikers since Davor Sukur. The diminutive Di Santo joins from Chelsea having seen EPL play before albeit in a 'super sub' sort of fashion. Di Santo's loan is only until January so if he wants to make an impact, it better be quick.

Lee Chung-yong - Bolton

The deal has been long rumored but was finally confirmed today. A winger like counterparts Seol (Fulham) and Park-Ji Sung (Man United), the 21-year old - nicknamed Blue Dragon - impressed during last summer's Olympics and now looks to up the ante in the EPL. The South Korea international has the pace and technical ability to succeed with Bolton but can he endure the physical nature of the Premier League? He was also on Manchester City's radar before Bolton soldified a three-year contract.

Fernando Guerrero - Burnley

Recently signed on loan from Independiente del Valle, the 19-year old winger is expected to be thrown straight into the fire. If the Clarets like what they see, they have the option to make the move permanent at season's end. Guerrero formerly had a stint with Real Madrid's youth system before finding his way home to Ecuador and progressing his game in a familiar location.

Daniel Sturridge - Chelsea

The Blues seem to be loaning every youngster out - Mancienne, Sinclair, Di Santo - but there are a couple key starlets in Carlo Ancelotti's plans this season. The main one is former Manchester City attacker Daniel Sturridge who quickly showed his worth in the tour of America. At 19 It really is hard to believe that at 22, Jon Obi Mikel is almost the elder statesmen in the midfield.

Jose Baxter - Everton

Forget Jack Rodwell and James Vaughan. These guys are old news even as they both barely crack the age of 21. Almost veterans by now, the Toffees look to unearth their next gem this season in forward Jose Baxter. With the fragile strike force of Saha, Jo, Yakubu, and Vaughan always on the mend, the 17 year old could see more than a game or two of time this season. The question is - can he make the best of his opportunities?

Chris Smalling - Fulham

The 19-year defender got one chance on the final match day of the 2008-2009 season to show his chops and he didn't disappoint. He has risen quickly through the youth ranks at Fulham and it remains to be seen whether or not he will represent England's U20 squad in the U20 World Cup come September. Regardless, Smalling is not too far down the depth chart and if Brede Hangeland or Fredrik Stoor leaves (as rumored) or injuries hit the backline, he could be thrust into the limelight. His stock has risen after a couple preseason starts in Australia.

Jozy Altidore - Hull City

A host of strikers have made their way to the Tigers and Jozy - on loan from Villarreal - must fight to ensure himself a first team spot. If successful, Altidore will get the service of former Man City and Barca midfielder Geovanni. His competition? Newly signed Kamel Ghilas of Celta and Seyi Olofinjana and current strikers Daniel Cousin and Caleb Folan. Add one more if Alvaro Negredo of Real Madrid signs too. Either way, Altidore has the ability to win a spot and potentially be one of the best young strikers in the EPL this season.

MLS Newcomers, Week 21: A Little Entertainment Goes a Long Way

Image: http://chicago.fire.mlsnet.com/images/2009/04/06/mRMLIQCG.jpg

1. *Peter Lowry...

1. Peter Lowry (Chicago)
It's four days later but still fresh in everybody's mind. Lowry's flying volley in his first MLS start Lowry and his work ethic, however, couldn't crack the resolve of the Houston Dynamo as the Fire lost 3-2. His goal was part of a three-minute double salvo that put the Fire right back into the match at 2-2 before falling to late Stuart Holden penalty conversion.

2. Jamie Smith (Colorado)

The new Rapids winger from Aberdeen could be a key pick-up heading down the homestretch. He adds exactly what Gary Smith expected - some speed but a lot of confidence, especially in the one-on-one situations. Even though the Cummings and Casey connection was in full force, Smith is going to be a huge fixture in the Rapids offense going forward with Colin Clark out for the rest of the season.

3. AJ DeLa Garza (Los Angeles)

The fullback keeps impressing and is becoming a mainstay in a Galaxy defense that has looked tight during their 5-0-1 run. This time around he helped neutralize the forward runs of Kevin Alston and Steve Ralston after Shalrie Joseph moved back into central midfield.

4. Omar Gonzalez (Los Angeles)

Gonzalez continues to play well with the tiny problem of conceding what seems like a penalty almost every game out. The 2-1 win over the Revs was no different as Steve Ralston converted a penalty after Gonzalez chopped down Kenny Mansally in the box.

5. David Ferreira (FC Dallas)

Ferreira continues to settle in and he looked good against a tough Houston defense. The Hoops came out victorious thanks to a well-taken Jeff Cunningham shot that gave them their first win vs. Western Conference opponents this season. Ferreira started his 20th consecutive league match for the Hoops and even though they might be out of the playoff race, Ferreira looks to build strong momentum heading into 2010.

6. Scott Palguta (Colorado)

Easily the most consistent Rapids central defender this season and becoming one of the best buys of the offseason. Makes you wonder why the Red Bulls passed up on Palguta in the first place. The former Rochester Rhino looked solid shutting out a sputtering Chivas USA offense. Can the Rapids continue this pace?

7. Kevin Alston (New England)

The Revs endured their first loss ever to Los Angeles at home but Alston, once again, stood out as one of the more dangerous players on the field. The youngster showed his attacking prowess for the second weekend in a row but it was still the Galaxy that prevailed. At what point do you throw the rookie into the running for Rookie of the Year?

8. Rachid El Khalifi (Real Salt Lake)

He only was given 23 minutes to help keep pressure on the Seattle defense as RSL tried to grab another win. It was a spirited debut for the Eerstedivisie veteran. He grabbed the best chance of the game after Robbie Findley's gamewinner.

9. Donovan Ricketts (Los Angeles)

Ricketts finds himself back on the list for a great game, a couple great saves, and a gutsy return from the 50-yard goal that tested Ricketts dignity and physical fortitude. He still remains the reason the Gals are 5-0-1 in their last six games.

10. Leo Gonzalez (Seattle)

A debut in which your duty is to mark arguably the best player on the planet in Lionel Messi is just plain mean. Gonzalez didn't look out of place and he showed that by grabbing a start in the 1-0 loss to Real Salt Lake. He has played well in his early time with Seattle but Sounders fans are now wondering if he could have helped improve past form if - when signed July 2nd - he could have played right away.

5 and 5, the Not-So-Goods: Bad Starts to the Season

5. Saint-Etienne are generally seen as one of the better teams in Ligue One but Les Verts have continued their rough stretch of form right on into the new season. After narrowly avoiding relegation in May, and regrouping (even adding a piece or two, Man City's wantaway Gelson Fernandes for one), they went into opening day with hope that a good start to the season would help propel them back to the top half of the table. Call it muscle memory or the recency effect but 90 minutes later and it was same-old, same-old in Saint-Etienne as Les Verts fell 2-0 to Nice.

4. Both Chivas USA and Seattle are trying to figure out what it is that's ailing them as they continue their fall from the top of the Western Conference. Chivas USA endured a rather embarassing 4-0 domination at the hands of the Rapids while a second-half Robbie Findley goal kept the Sounders from leaving Rio Tinto with any points. For Seattle, things don't get much better in the coming days as they face the rising Galaxy at the Home Depot Center. For the Goats, however, they get to face the Red Bulls and if a loss ensues...could Preki face the hot seat?

3. Manchester United can complain all they want about the uncalled foul on Michael Ballack but nobody will put those PKs in the back of the net for you. After a spirited equalizer from Wayne Rooney in injury time, converting one PK is unforgivable with a chance to win. To add to the defeat, United will almost certainly lose winger Nani - one of the impressive performers in Sunday's Community Shield - until mid-September with a shoulder injury. Not the best way to start a season and it's pretty clear that although the Red Devils come in as defending champs once again, Chelsea firmly have most of the momentum. Ben Foster's performance, a knock, and some supporter backlash will also force Sir Alex Ferguson to choose between Foster and the other back-up Kuszczak.

2. The death of Espanyol captain Daniel Jarque rocked La Liga once again a little under a year after the death of Sevilla's promising young winger Antonio Puerta. At only 26, Jarque suffered a heart attack at the club hotel as the Barcelona-based club was in the midst of its preseason tour of Italy. Over 50,000 visited the new Espanyol stadium to pay tribute to Jarque but many have yet to even come to terms with it. Rest in peace, Daniel Jarque.

1. Norwich City started their life in League One with a pitiful display at home against Colchester United. The Canaries had their share of shots but Colchester took advantage of every one of theirs, striking an amazing seven times in 7-1 win that will surely do damage to Norwich's label as preseason promotion favorites. It was 5-0 nothing even before the first-half whistle was blown and supporters - two to be exact - rushed on the field to throw their season tickets in Norwich manager Bryan Gunn's face. It's hard to believe that Norwich, Charlton, and Southampton, all former EPL brands now play their soccer in League One. Can Norwich recover from the first day embarrassment to start the long road up the mountain?
