Are Benitez's days numbered?

Posted 03 Nov 2009 at 05:11 PM by David Bolt (The voice from the Mersey)

Here’s a question for you all. What record does Don Welsh currently hold for Liverpool F.C.?

Well done to you if you knew that Welsh is the only manager to have been fired by Liverpool F.C. in their 117-year history (apparently Gerard Houllier’s departure by mutual consent wasn’t just a kinder way of saying he was fired). I think he’s going to lose that record very soon.

Time is surely running out on the Rafael Benitez era at Anfield. The owners and directors simply cannot idly sit by and watch performances as abject as the last few games, Man United excepted, and think...

Are Hicks and Gillett really that bad?

Posted 24 Oct 2009 at 04:10 PM by David Bolt (The voice from the Mersey)

At Anfield on Sunday (25th October), there will be a protest march, organised by the Spirit of Shankly group, against the Liverpool owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett. To say that these men are unpopular would be understatement of the century. “There is a lot of anger and people want their feelings known - Hicks and Gillett are not welcome at the club," spokesman James McKenna said, "We hope a couple of thousand fans will turn out for the protest."

The Spirit of Shankly group believes about 4,000 fans turned out for a similar protest in September 2008, before Liverpool beat Manchester...

Benitez Beaten by a Beach Ball!

Posted 19 Oct 2009 at 04:55 PM by David Bolt (The voice from the Mersey)

We were absolutely atrocious against Sunderland at the weekend. You’d have thought that after the game at Stamford Bridge, the players would be fired up and ready to make a statement that Liverpool are serious about winning the title. You’d be wrong.

Firstly, the beach ball situation. Yes the goal should not have stood, as the rules state that in occasions such as that, a bounce-up on the edge of the area is the correct course of action. However, the fact remains that we got exactly what we deserved from that game. Nothing.

I am struggling to find the words that...

Sorry Ollie, Lucas Leiva is just NOT good enough!

Posted 30 Sep 2009 at 04:47 PM by David Bolt (The voice from the Mersey)

Reading Ollie Irish’s article (Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva- as bad as they say?, 29/09/09) about how Lucas Leiva isn’t as bad as some Liverpool fans say he is, I was about to post a reply, but I didn’t think I could do it justice in such a small space so here goes.

There is some truth to the fact that fans were disappointed because we were expecting a flair player. There is just something about ‘Brazilian Player of the Year’ that screams Romario rather than Dunga. Also, you have to remember that Lucas came into the squad as the popular Luis Garcia was sold, and we though he...

Why do teams struggle to play against ten men?

Posted 29 Sep 2009 at 10:11 AM by David Bolt (The voice from the Mersey)

After watching Wolves fail to make any real impression against Manchester United in their Carling Cup tie last week, and after seeing it time and time again, I was wondering, why do teams struggle to play against ten men, especially those teams who are behind or level when they get the man advantage?

Wigan did a good job against Chelsea at the weekend, but that was a slightly different scenario in that Chelsea had to attack to try and salvage something from the game so Wigan always had space to move the ball into, which makes things a lot easier.

It should be easy playing...

10 Reasons why England won't win the World Cup

Posted 14 Sep 2009 at 05:13 PM by David Bolt (The voice from the Mersey)

With England having qualified for the 2010 World Cup, the newspapers have been full of optimism and praise for Fabio Capello’s team. Basically the press and the general public believe England will win the World Cup and have come up with all kinds of reasons why they will succeed, from the reasonable (good wins in qualifying) to the ridiculous (one newspaper sais England will win because it will be cold in South Africa and that will favour them (though strangely not Norway, Russia, USA or any other country where it is much colder than England in the winter!)

I’m a Wales fan and I’m...

Signing young foreign players is wrong, but unstoppable

Posted 10 Sep 2009 at 02:01 PM by David Bolt (The voice from the Mersey)

I’m sure most people reading this will be aware that Chelsea have been banned from signing any new players in the next two transfer windows by FIFA for allegedly encouraging Gael Kakuta to break his contract with French club Lens to sign for them.

The reaction to this here in England by some Chelsea fans and journalists is to say that once again FIFA and UEFA have some kind of conspiracy against the Premier League. That is total nonsense as similar punishments have been handed out to Swiss side Sion earlier this year, and to Roma in 2004.

Reports are that Manchester...

The Strange Story of Shane Supple

Posted 25 Aug 2009 at 10:22 AM by David Bolt (The voice from the Mersey)

Many of you will not have heard of Shane Supple. Some people will be familiar with him as a good, cheap goalkeeping option in the super-addictive Football Manager series of games. Some of you may be avid followers of Ipswich Town, Republic of Ireland or just fans of Championship football in general.

Supple was a 22-year-old backup keeper for Ipswich Town. He was a highly rated prospect who had made nearly 40 first-team appearances and was a huge part of Ipswich’s 2005...

From a worried Liverpool fan.

Posted 18 Aug 2009 at 10:14 AM by David Bolt (The voice from the Mersey)

I have to be honest here. I saw that result coming.

I attended the friendly match against Atletico Madrid and I left the stadium a very worried man. Worried because it seems as though none of the glaringly obvious deficiencies in the Liverpool team have been addressed in any way, shape or form in the off-season.

Then the Spurs game happened.

We were shambolic in the first half. We couldn’t string two passes together and struggled to make any impression on the game at all. Things were compounded when Carragher and Skrtel both jumped for the same ball leaving...

EPL Previewed in Haikus!

Posted 13 Aug 2009 at 04:19 PM by David Bolt (The voice from the Mersey)
Updated 14 Aug 2009 at 03:09 PM by David Bolt

As the new season is nearly upon us, I thought, in a moment of stupifying boredom at work, to do a preview in Haiku's.

Now, I've never written poetry before, much less a Haiku, so I apologise if these are a little ropey. Have a look anyway. For those who don't know, a Haiku is Japanese poems consisting of 17 syllables, in a 5-7-5 arrangement.
