Silly Season Primer: New Feature and Who's Looking at Who?

Posted 29 May 2009 at 09:17 PM by Breton Bonnette (Center Holds It)

It's about that crazy time of year again. Where transfer rumors inundate our everyday soccer-driven lives and we all wonder where our favorite player or most hated player is going to end up. Last summer, we did an EPL transfer gauge - collecting the rumors and creating a somewhat flawed away of assessing a team's offseason in the transfer market. This time around, we'll make it a top 10 (do that a lot around here) - European clubs ranked based on pick-ups or departures that stand to make 2009-2010 "THE season". To whet your taste, here's a quick rundown of who squads have been heavily linked with...

5 and 5: Kandji show, Fulham so close, but many Yanks Abroad squads falter...

Posted 10 May 2009 at 10:03 PM by Breton Bonnette (Center Holds It)

Things always get more interesting as the season comes to a close...

5. You can't mention Major League Soccer this weekend without talking recognizing the work of Macoumba Kandji. In an exciting weekend of games, Kandji stood out by absolutely owning San Jose's best defender in Nick Garcia. His speed and strength were too much for the Quakes backline as he stretched them for 1 goal and two assists. Kandji's game couldn't make up for the anemic 8,000 in the stands for the Friday...

With a family emergency earlier this week, I wasn't able to take a look at La Liga (little bit today, more tomorrow) and the Eredivisie from this past weekend. Let's do it brief form as some good stuff came to light...

Dutch Eredivisie

Former Ajax youth star Nigel de Jong, who left Amsterdam ArenA several years ago for HSV (along with Rafael Van der Vaart), will now make his living in England playing for Mark Hughes...

LA LIGA: Can Real Madrid make history?

Posted 09 Jan 2009 at 05:54 PM by Breton Bonnette (Center Holds It)

Small change of pace. With the weekend coming up, gotta talk briefly about what's in store...

Real Madrid

Real Madrid has one hell of a New Year’s challenge ahead of them. A good start, of course, with the 1-0 win over Villarreal last weekend but overcoming this particular challenge will be something of historic proportions if carried out. They’ve added Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, a new and healthy Diarra in Lassana and both...

Weekend Review: La Liga - Barca 10 points clear, MLS Miami

Posted 22 Dec 2008 at 07:08 PM by Breton Bonnette (Center Holds It)

La Liga

Thierry Henry and Seydou Keita ensured that Barcelona kept expanding their lead with two late goals to push Barca past a Jozy Altidore-less Villarreal. Barca were down a goal early after a Cani strike right after the break, but the rest of the half was Barca’s up until Pique was sent off late in the game. After that, it was all Yellow Submarine but the league leaders stood strong and beat away attack after attack.

In other Barca...

Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid? - "we have already signed the best player for the summer"

Posted 17 Dec 2008 at 08:52 PM by Breton Bonnette (Center Holds It)

Cristiano Ronaldo flying off to Madrid?

I'm pretty sick of this, but I felt I should at least pass it on. Not going to even try and discuss it much as there's going to be a huge back-and-forth over the next couple weeks.

In short, Ronaldo is ready for a new challenge. Madrid seemingly backed off after trying to unsettle Cristiano in order to keep Manchester United from becoming an enemy. Then, according to a big mouth Real director Pedro Trapote, Madrid already has an under-the-table deal with United to bring Ronaldo to Real at the end of the 2008-09 season.
