Gold Cup May Be Brew That is True for Mexico

Posted 15 Jul 2009 at 09:06 PM by John Jagou (Sunshine Pumping...Optional)

The Gold Cup could not have come at a better time for Javier Aguirre and Mexico. After 3 games, some lingering questions are becoming clearer. A few players have impressed, others are wasting the opportunity, and the rudderless ship that has been mired in a CONCACAF tempest over the past six months is showing faint signs of getting back on course.

It just doesn’t seem right that we can count on one hand what teams in the Mexican Primera have not made coaching changes in 2008-2009. 2 more coaches were handed pink slips this week. One was not surprising: After much speculation, Efrain Flores was finally given the boot at Chivas. That 11-goal week seemed like it was so long ago. The goals and the wins have dried up, and Chivas are now in danger of missing the liguilla for the second season in a row. In the Mexican primera, it’s harder to miss...

Boricuas, Hobbits, Tacos, & Rafa

Puerto Rico did what it had to do last night. They got the goals they needed to have a chance in the second leg. More importantly, they did not concede any. The 5-time CCC winners will now see of they can get the three goals they need to advance next month at the Azul. Santos was able to pull off the miracle in their second leg vs. Montreal, partly because Montreal ran out of gas in the second half. It also helped that Santos have very good strikers at their disposal. The Islanders, though, are more compact, and will be more match fit.

But Torreon is not Mexico City. The...

Cabañas Shows America the Way -- Ipswich Hopes Gio Can as Well

Posted 16 Mar 2009 at 07:59 PM by John Jagou (Sunshine Pumping...Optional)

Salvador Cabañas continued his personal assault against Cruz Azul as Club America erupted for 3 goals in the first half in the clásico joven, pushing his personally tally against the máquina to double digits. And more importantly, their defense held the cementeros for the rest of the game, save for a converted penalty kick. The Paraguayan showed America the way as he knocked in a rebound and scored another on a superbly taken free kick. It was a huge win against one of their biggest rivals. After being left for dead just a few short weeks ago, Club America can climb to within one point of...

Hey, Gio, Qué Pasó?

We thought you were going to be our vato..

Giovani Dos Santos travled to Mexico yesterday to train with the national team. It is not very often that a European team allows a player to leave for national team duty before the standard window. Unheard of really, but very indicative of the year Gio has had in North London.

We all know the story. A 15 year old boy wonder helps Mexico win the U17 world cup in Perú. Considered a can’t miss property for Barcelona, the next Ronaldinho,...
