Quick Bits, MLS-Style: Uuuuunion!

Posted 28 May 2009 at 11:37 PM by Breton Bonnette (Center Holds It)

Piotr Nowak
has resigned from his position as Head Assistant Coach for the USMNT. Nowak's departure comes just before the Philadelphia Union unveiled a press conference for tomorrow at 3:00PM introducing Nowak as Philly's first "team manager". Sons of Ben and the Union also introduced a "Meet the Coach" event being held in tandem with the USMNT World Cup qualifying match vs. Costa Rica on June 3rd. I would love to hear a little Nowak commentary on the dangers of the Ticos. That'll take place at Tir Na Nog at 16th and...

The Sweet Sound of Suites

Posted 28 May 2009 at 10:27 PM by Pack87Man (The Business of US Soccer)
Tags stadiums

It's a relatively minor thing, when put up against everything else that is going on with Major League Soccer these days. However, the Associated Press thought it merited a mention that the New York Red Bulls had announced the prices of the suites in Red Bull Arena. I suppose a 60-90 day joke would be appropriate here, but for the fans, I imagine that each announcement makes the impending opening that much more real.

In a way, suites are something that either represents the root of all evil when it comes to fandom, or the cash machine that grows your team. Either way, the number...

Pumas' Historic Stadium Plays Host to Another Final

Posted 28 May 2009 at 08:17 PM by John Jagou (Sunshine Pumping...Optional)

The first of the two-legged Final takes place tonight at Pumas’ home stadium, Estadio Universitario, Estadio Olimpico, Estadio Mexico68, CU. It has many names. It may not have the historical footie cache as the Azteca has(if two dazzling world cup finals aren't enough, may I present Italy's 4-3 semi final classic over W Germany in 1970), but it has its share of unforgettable moments, and not all of them have to do with futbol.

During the Mexico City Olympics, the stadium was witness to two unbelievable world records that were set within minutes of each other: Bob Beamon’s ridiculous...

Countdown till 100 Blog Posts:

The world and CR7 had better move over. A new superstar is coming through. And it is in Argentina super great Lionel Messi. Messi has not in any way been a new superstar to come into the world soccer stage. The U-20 World Cup showed why he was going to be the best player in the world eventually as after being put on for Pablo Vitti he never looked back getting the tournament...

The final of the most famous competition on the planet takes place on May 30 at Wembley as Everton and Chelsea battle for the FA Cup. The match kicks off at 10am EST and is live on Fox Soccer Channel as the showpiece occasion brings the curtain down on another compelling season in England.

This will be one of the final matches Everton will play in until they face-off against MLS All-Stars on July 29 at Real Salt Lake Stadium, the League's newest soccer-specific venue. American Tim Howard makes a return as Everton's goalkeeper in hopes of...

What is it with Nigerian football fans?

Posted 28 May 2009 at 03:36 PM by Orlando Rays (Dog's Eye View)

Perhaps its time for Nigeria to quit airing European football and get them into their own leagues.

Nigerians are notorious supporters of European football, especially Manchester United. But their internal hooliganism as far as MUFC is concerned is enough to make the Subway Army tell them to cool it.

The latest act of violence: A Red Devils fan in Ogbo drove his minibus through a crowd of FC Barcelona supporters, killing four and injuring 10.

Last year, seven fans were killed in June after the 2008 Champions League final between United and Chelsea. Then in...

Newcomers Team of the Season!

Posted 28 May 2009 at 03:18 PM by David Bolt (The voice from the Mersey)

The Premier League is one of the toughest leagues in the world. Many great players arrive and struggle to succeed. Here’s a team of players who made it look easy.

I’ve put them in a 4-4-1-1 formation and I’ve not included players who only arrived in January, so no Arshavin. Also, the players can’t have played in the Premier League before this season (so Mendy and Sorensen don’t count).

GK: Boaz Myhill (Hull): Was a huge part of Hull’s flying start and one of the main reasons they stayed up. Lost his place at the turn of the year but reclaimed it in style.

The Games that Never Stop

Posted 28 May 2009 at 11:59 AM by EstebanLugo (The Colombian Window)

While the world stands in awe to praise F.C. Barcelona and their wonderful football, the Colombian game keeps on going and even I have a hard time trying to keep up with it. I had to go on a forced hiatus right before I was going to post a review of weekend’s games and guess what? The second matchday was already played last night! So I guess I have no other choice but to move forward along with the show.
In group A, Once Caldas got the lead with 4 points after a controversial win against...

All hail Barcelona, all fail United

Posted 28 May 2009 at 11:36 AM by Ollie Irish (Ollie Irish - Premier League Tales)

Barcelona 2-0 Manchester United

When Thierry Henry was at Arsenal, for two or three seasons he was their best player, and by a clear margin. he won games virtually on his own, and was adored by Arsenal's fans. Now, at Barcelona, with his career entering its final phase, the Frenchman accepts that he is no longer the star, but part of the supporting cast to the three best players in the world: Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta.

As such, Henry has had to bury his ego, which...
