Governor Gregoire Interview

Posted 05 Mar 2009 at 07:37 PM by Prost Amerika (World Soccer Scene from Seattle)

Governor Christine Gregoire was a welcome guest at Columbia Tower in November 2007, when the MLS held the press conference that made the award of an MLS franchise to Seattle official. With two daughters who are devoted to the beautiful game, she proudly described herself as a “soccer mom”.

With exactly two weeks to go until the kick off of Seattle’s MLS odyssey, Prost Amerika interviewed the Governor to get her views on soccer, stimulus packages and her staunch belief in Washington State’s tourist industry.

Beatniks are out to make it rich

Posted 05 Mar 2009 at 06:50 PM by Dan Loney (Dan Loney Blog)

FREE LANDON aw crap.

How to describe what I'm feeling.

Okay. Let's say you're Mike Farrell. Mumia Abu-Jamal has been free for forty-five minutes, and he's gone on a killing spree in an orphanage while screaming "MASH went totally downhill after Trapper John left!"

What can I say? I really thought Klinzi was going to be his guardian angel here. He might not start every game, but he'd be at a big club, against quality players, and away from the Galaxy trainwreck.

I'm surprised this:

"I am very excited to be returning

World Cup Qualifiying: CAF (Group C)

Posted 05 Mar 2009 at 04:19 PM by rohan_ricketts_rox (Soccer in the great white north)

Player of the group:

Amr Zaki, Wigan Athletic, Egypt

Egypt
Egypt is good, and that is pretty much all i can say. Having made 2 world cups and making it to round 2 of the tournament gives them a good amount of qualification in the CAF. But while that is pretty good there results in the African Nations Cup is probably the best part of the whole thing, they have qualified for yes, 21 tournaments. And they have won 6, i consider that a dominent force in any continent in the world....

Close the deal

Posted 05 Mar 2009 at 03:51 PM by rohan_ricketts_rox (Soccer in the great white north)

A Cinderella story? A dream come true for canadian soccer fans? Whatever you call it it continues tonight!

Montreal Impact are playing a role that they have not yet really played in this, the CONCACAF Champions league and that is finisher. The are leading a home and away seires to the much talked about Santos Laguna of Mexico by two goals. And they are all pumped up having just come from a staduim filled with 55,000 fans at Montreals Olympic Staduim, an number which shocked me. How did Montreal Impact, a team...

The Mysterious Case of BarcaMiami

Posted 05 Mar 2009 at 12:30 PM by Bill Archer (Bill Archer Blog)

A few weeks back, in this very space, I allowed as to how it seemed to me that having a big foreign club like Barcelona become a member of MLS carried with it more problems than it was worth.

Virtually alone in the sea of "...and having Barcelona in MLS will of course give the league a tremendous boost" happy talk from every soccer writer in the country (not one of whom ever bothered to explain exactly what it was that having someone's farm club in our purportedly "Major" league did besides stamp "MINOR LEAGUE" across our collective forehead; everyone seemed to feel that these wonderful...

Robin van Persie wants a happy ending, and other midweek Premier League notes

Posted 05 Mar 2009 at 10:29 AM by Ollie Irish (Ollie Irish - Premier League Tales)
Updated 05 Mar 2009 at 01:17 PM by Ollie Irish

Is it acceptable to base an entire blog around a lame pun? Probably not, so I'll only devote a part of this post to the revelation that RvP said this week he wants "a happy ending" to the season. Tee-hee. He also said it would be "an incredible failure" if Arsenal fail to qualify for the 2009/10 Champions League.

Will Arsenal claw their way back into a Champions League position? A few weeks ago I predicted they would, and with Aston Villa fading (they lost 2-0 to Man City last night), fourth place...

Sweet, more John Sitton

Posted 05 Mar 2009 at 09:28 AM by Ollie Irish (Ollie Irish - Premier League Tales)

It's truly a great day when the internet offers forth a new clip of John Sitton, the cult ex-manager of Leyton Orient who can't say three words unless one of them is f**k.

In this clip, Sitton rants at his team when they come in at half-time 3-0 down to Brentford. It's a beautiful example of brilliant man-management, if by brilliant man-management you mean scaring the life out of your players.

You think this sort of treatment is what a player like Didier Drogba needs? Damn right it is. Indeed, any club which is struggling to control...

Can real madrid make a massive comeback?

Posted 05 Mar 2009 at 05:27 AM by Edcombs

Real Madrid who had been ruled out of the title contention just a few months ago have proved book markers wrong, they were trailing arch rivals Barcelona by a massive twelve points a month ago and it looked unlikely they would come close to reaching them. But four weeks down the line, Merengues have done what no one expected them to do by reducing the gap to just four points and making them genuine title contenders for the third time in a row.
They have been very consistent since the year began winning all their matches apart from a disappointing home defeat to...

Arsenal find a goal at last

Posted 05 Mar 2009 at 05:24 AM by Edcombs

After four consecutive premier league matches without a goal, Arsenal finally found themselves on the score sheet at the Hawthorns. It took the gunners only four minutes to find the back of the net after Samir Nasri’s corner found Nicklas Bendtner unmarked who shot low to the right of the keeper .This was pleasing to the manager whose side had failed to score in three hundred and sixty minutes of football in the premier league .But their lead was short lived as West Brom struck after three minutes from a powerful free kick that left Almunia with no chance of getting close....
