EPL 2007-2008 Team of the Year - Forwards
Posted 15 May 2008 at 02:34 PM by CCSC_STRIKER20
Well here are the last two members of my EPL 2007-2008 Team of the Year. They are the two most prolific forwards in the EPL this year, and it wasn't really much of a competition for these two spots.
There were quite a few strikers that deserve honorable mentions, and some may end up making the bench. Roque Santa Cruz had a great debut season with 19 goals, and is probably the best output for the money this year alone. Benjani and Yakubu, Manchester City and Everton respectively, also had good years totaling 15 goals each.
Then there were the decent strike partnerships that managed to occasionally light up the Premier League. Tottenham's Robbie Keane (15 goals) and Dimitar Berbatov (15 goals) led the way, while Manchester United's title-winning pair of Tevez (14 goals) and Rooney (12 goals) were second, finally followed by the Aston Villa pair Jon Carew (13 goals) and Gabriel Abonglahor (11 goals) who quietly had a decent season as well.
Tomorrow I will review my team as well as setup a 7 man bench for this great squad.
Forward
Okay, so in this picture Torres looks all of 16 years of age, but in truth, this Liverpool new boy was a man among boys this season. He made defenses and keepers look foolish on his his way to 24 open play league goals. And I make a big deal about the open play part because Torres didn't take any free kicks or penalties this season. When you hear Luis Aragones say that "he never scores the same goal twice", and then you watch him play, you realize that is the truth. This year he scored all sorts of goals, and he scored them in some of the bigger games (Inter and Chelsea) and in clutch moments (Boro and Fulham). He broke RVN's foreign debut season goal record, and the scary thought for many teams is that he can only get better. He should try to score more away from home, but that is really just nitpicking on a great striker who had a great debut year.Forward
Everyone thought that with the injury to Robin van Persie and the departure of Thierry Henry that Arsenal would struggle to find the net this year. Well, Emanuel Adebayor proved them wrong and then some. Adebayor, who also netted 24 league goals, was an integral part of Arsenal's unsuccessful run at the title. He was a dominant force, and often proved to be too much for opposing defenses to handle. He reminds me of a younger, faster Didier Drogba, and if he stays at Arsenal for the next couple of years, him and RVP may develop a deadly partnership. The only downfall I would have to say of Adebayor is his attitude (ask Bendtner). I think that Wenger knew Adebayor was capable of this and that is why he was comfortable of letting Henry go last summer. There were quite a few strikers that deserve honorable mentions, and some may end up making the bench.
