Courtesy of the good people at SBS THE WORLD GAME is every defender's worst nightmare:

THE WORST OWN GOAL EVER?

I'm sure there have been equals, but at the least this one is a Top Ten candidate. The defender hits a picture-perfect strike into the upper 90. Really lovely.

The funny part is that, with most own goals, the attacking team manages to find the guy on their side who last touched the ball and crowd around him for a pretend goal celebration.

In this case, they can't figure out what to do so they hold a sort of group hug at the top of the box, kind of like the last day of some New Age male bonding retreat.

And as a special bonus for having hit this post, I hereby present:

BRAZILIAN SOCCER AS PLAYED BY....UM....."NOT TALL" PEOPLE

If you expect me to insert some comment about, say, these guys taking Toronto FC to overtime, or finally finding a team for Kyle Martino, just forget it. Not going there.

I don't know ... I've seen a K-League or J-League highlight where the goalie fakes the throw to the wing two or three times, doesn't release the ball on the last "fake", and throws it into his own net around his body.

^^ That's the one that immediately came to my mind. Or the defender who tries to clear it backwards, the ball ricochets off of his face, and goes into his own goal.

Some more info: the first link is from a two-legged Hungarian cup match. The team taking the penalty lost the first leg 2-1 and was 2-1 up in the second leg, so this sent them 3-1 up.

The guy that kicked it in off his face is Chris Brass from Bury, who scored for Darlington:

I also like this Ian Dowie one, a picture-perfect header:

Caricola's own goal in the Metrostars' home debut was pretty nice.

To add insult to injury, or more accurately injury to insult, when he kicked the ball against his own face, Chris Brass broke his nose.

Holy crap! Just watching that '96 game.... look how slow the play is. I realize it's the ass end of the game but it looks like a co-ed league.
