We had a thread on here a few months back and almost everyone included Dooley in their all-time US XI, yet he is not in the HOF.
I think he should be voted in because:
He started every game in both the '94 and '98 World Cups.
He played every minute of every game in '94
He was the captain of the US World Cup squad.
He received 81 Caps for his country.
He was named the US Soccer male athlete of the year in 1993
Thomas played professionally for 14 years in Germany
He won the German cup with Kaiserslautern
He won the UEFA CUP with Schalke against Inter Milan
He played 3 seasons in the MLS
He was on the MLS Best XI and was 2nd in Defender of the year voting in 1997
He was on the MLS best XI in 1998
He won the MLS Fair Play Award in 1998
He continues to support US Soccer by establishing a Youth Academy in CaliforniaPosted 09 Nov 2009 at 02:15 PM by Monarch Bay Beachbum

Joe Max-Moore, John O'Brien, and Earnie Stewart should join Tom Dooley in this year's class.Posted 09 Nov 2009 at 02:27 PM by ChelseaMatt

My voices would be for Dooley, Etcheverry, Stewart, Moore and Noguiera (j/k).
None of the nominated women really seem to be in the same class has Hamm, Akers, etc, even though they got a lot of caps and goals. Nice careers, not HOF worthy, imho.
Nowak's an interesting case. His playing career is impressive, and even his 5 years in MLS, but I think his lasting legacy to American soccer will be as a coach. Same with Kinnear.
I know a lot of us will call for O'Brien, but while his star was bright, it wasn't sustained. In his case at least, it was better to fade away rather than burn out.Posted 09 Nov 2009 at 02:28 PM by Sachin

My ballot for the previous two years (exact same list of eligible players) was this:
Jeff Agoos - Elected in 2009
Joy Fawcett - Elected in 2009
Mauricio Cienfuegos
Roy Lassiter
Peter Nowak
Preki
Earnie Stewart
Voters can vote for 10 players. I think, unplanned, I have ended up voting for seven every year I've had a ballot.
I'll go through all the players, but I'll most likely continue to vote for the five returning options.
Of the three new players, I don't see Eduardo Hurtado making the cut, but I'll have to take a good look at both Chris Henderson and John O'Brien. I'm probably leaning against JOB and neutral on Hendo at this point, but that's what the research is for.
I will probably, once again, look at Dooley and some of the others I haven't been voting for. I'll definitely keep my eye on the discussion here.Posted 09 Nov 2009 at 03:00 PM by AndyMead

Here's a good thread on the discussion after the 2008 vote, where no players got in:

Stewart, Dooley, Etcheverry, Parlo. Likely in that order.
Parlo's career was marked by injuries, yet she still has a nearly 50% strike rate on teams with LOTS of other firepower and people calling for the ball. She was also on the roster for 3 Olympic teams, and 3 WC squads, and a dominant college player. That's a long period of impact on the game.
Other than that, it's hard for me to imagine almost any of the others on the list ever qualifying.
Some are very close but, perhaps, just shy of HOF caliber (Joe-Max, Shannon Mac, Robin Fraser). Some may eventually qualify by a combination of their playing careers and other contributions (Kinnear, Preki, Novak), and some, just...no, either because their best days were elsewhere (Valderrama), or just...no (Doyle, Trittschuh, Venturini, Diaz Arce).Posted 09 Nov 2009 at 04:24 PM by Martininho

How is Tom Dooley not in the Hall of Fame, and how can anyone post here and admit they have not voted for him.
FYI, he also won the Bundesliga with Kaiserslautern.Posted 09 Nov 2009 at 06:59 PM by Zak1FCK
