Hi - I'm sure we're all settling in to see who the last playoff team is, so I just wanted to give some food for thought.

Under the current playoff format, fifth place teams are unbeaten in the first round. This is the third year out of three that a fifth place team will be in the playoffs.

Sixth place teams have no record in the playoffs yet.

Historically, first place teams have been safe bets, but since 2004 at least one division winner has crashed out in the first round.

So, the smartest thing Chivas USA has done all season was gag this afternoon against Houston, and the smartest thing the Crew could do tonight is to beat New England (in order to avoid the invincible fifth place team, and get the untested sixth place team).

(Well, also because right now Real Salt Lake is a better team than Colorado, but I prefer to traffic in voodoo magic when predicting playoffs. Like your system works any better.)

We can talk awards later, but, if Shalrie Joseph is just astounding tonight, AND it looks as if the Crew are trying, then I can tolerate him as MVP. Otherwise, Landon.

the Crew didn't fare too well at Rio Tinto this season...this could be a tough series for them.

So Dan, now that the Galaxy finished with the fewest losses in MLS and the second-most points, you gonna admit you might have been just a bit wrong about Arena and this year's Galaxy?

No visiting team fared too well at Rio Tinto this season. But RSL didn't fare well anywhere else.

A seven sentece blog entry by Dan Loney? Holy s&%t! Granted, you squeezed it out to 7 paragraphs as well, but I guess this begs the question - who filled in for Dan this week?

This may be the shortest Loney blog entry I've ever read. I've written longer text messages while taking a leak.

Given the Galaxy's radical improvement on defense this year and his steadiness from the first minute of the year right through to the last, I'm not sure Ricketts isn't the MVP of that team. Which doesn't necesarily mean Landon isn't the MVP of the league, but it does say something about the Galaxy.

I also think the Crew have something to worry about with RSL. If they get down a couple of goals after their trip to Salt Lake, they may not be able to turn it on in Columbus and pull it out.

FlashMan, I would agree with you about that scenario except for one thing, we're talking about RSL on the road. They'd better run p the score and drive the Crew out of the Rockies in the first leg because no RSL lead is safe away from Brighamyoungistan.

    Well, either way it's Donovan.
