Typical boring CONCACAF. Mexico and US qualify with room to spare, Central American teams fight for the other spots, and some baseball country along to make it a Hex instead of a Pent. We all saw this coming last year. Ho hum.

So, yeah, that happened.

What more is there to say about Landon Donovan?

Now, I don't always agree with Bob Bradley's choices, but I may need to slightly modify something I said earlier about Conor Casey:

Quote:
If Conor Casey ever scores two goals on the road in World Cup qualifying, I will buy a webcam and cut my nuts off live on the Internet.
After further review, what I meant to say was:

Quote:
Look out for Carlos Pavon. Alexi Lalas NEVER gave him a fair shake in Los Angeles, and if you give him half a chance, he will kill you EVERY TIME.
This was one of the most maddening games in the history of a national team program that makes Scientology seem reasonable by comparison. And they had me going for a second, too - or more precisely, forty-five minutes.

"Why am I trying to find a horrible feed of gray dots and white dots not doing anything? Why don't I just check out how Iowa is doing against Michigan, and read about it tomorrow?"

By the way, sorry I killed that one pirate feed by posting the link on the homepage. Who'd have thought posting a link on the front of the biggest soccer site in the country would backfire?

And I wonder how many people will remember this game as the match that had Paliakos for Honduras against Fellabber for the US?

Anyway, glad I hung in there for the second half. Funny old game, etc.

Even Matchtracker was tense. Even - ESPECIALLY - the BigSoccer play-by-play thread. Relive the pageantry here. Knowing the ending makes it even better.

Was it all good? Oh, Christ, no. I wanted Hejduk and Conrad in there, unironically, seriously, for reals - in fact, they'd better start against Costa Rica, or else, I'll blog about it or something. Jonathan Spector is the luckiest SOB in American soccer right now, and I hope he appreciates that as he watches Honduras fans open Carlos Pavon's chest and eat his still-beating heart.

We owe it to Honduras to start our first team at RFK and play our hardest...but we owe it to the US to play the B-team. Yeah, I remember how that worked in the Gold Cup, but what's the worst that could happen? Mexico wins the group?

EDIT - okay, Trinidad isn't a baseball country. But I don't like cricket - oh no.

Yes, I just made a joke that either people won't get at all, or will treat as if I had referenced "Whoomp, there it is." I don't care. The US qualified while giving its entire fan base a collective heart attack. I'm going to make bad jokes and tall glasses of whiskey.

Dan, if you really do the whole buy a webcam and cut off your nuts live on the internet thing, you should sell the rights specifically to bars so they can charge $20 a pop for folks to see it.

Seriously tho, amazing result for the Nats. I even saw them keep possession for long stretches in the second half, which they seem to never be able to do. But lets keep it real here....Carlos Pavon personally made sure the US qualified tonight. That being said, I'm proud of the boys. Job well done!

Ok, it's 1:30 a.m. and I'm drunk, not because I saw the US grabbing the ticket for South Africa, but because I, as a Peruvian, almost (by a few seconds) left the f u c k i n g argentineans out of the world cup, but then I came back from my brother-in-law's house, where we watch the Peru v. Argentina game, and tried, unsuccessfully, to watch the U.S v. Honduras game, and came to find out that the US actually won at Honduras and qualified for the World Cup, GOD I LOVE THIS COUNTRY.. GO USA, WE HAVE THE WORLD IN OUR HANDS!!! ok, I'm drunk...

Oh God, reading the PBP thread is one of the funniest things I've seen in ages. This is concentrated stupid and awesome in one, ginormous package. Someone should send it to wherever truck stop they move the Soccer Hall of Fame for it to be studied by future fans.

I was pretty embarrassed by the US'a play. It was more Honduras losing the game than the US winning. Our midfield was pathetic. Davies missed an absolute sitter in the first half. Our defense left the field 10 minutes before the final whistle. Pathetic. We were lucky that Honduras choked worse than we did.

I wouldn't be so upset if our midfield could complete a stinking pass with only the slightest bit of pressure.

Nice title. We won, and I'll take it.

But except for Howard, Gooch, Boca, Donovan, and Davies, that WAS the B team (Hejduk and Dolo > Spector, Bornstein; Dempsey > Holden, Atlidore > Casey; Jones or Edu > Clark, and Feilhaber > Bradley).

So, if we start the B team:

    -----------Guzan---------
    Dolo--Onyewu--Conrad--Hejduk
    ------Clark---Feilhaber-----
    Holden-----------------Torres
    -------Altidore---Ching-----

We'll still do OK. Possibly better than last night.
