The Altidore Experiment: this one might work
Tags hull city, jozy altidore, phil brown
One 100% heterosexual ass-tap, administered by Steve Parkin (Hull City's first-team coach), propelled Jozy Altidore into the Premier League arena for the first time. That's how we do things in England. "Get out there lad and score us a bloody goal," Parkin added. Or something like that.
Altidore didn't score a goal on his Prem debut he replaced Caleb Folan in the 60th minute of Hull's home game v Bolton Wanderers on Saturday but he did the next best thing in setting up team-mate Kamel Ghilas to bang in the game's only goal. Watch it below:
Altidore's assist was as instinctive and athletic as the Algerian's finish. On this evidence, Altidore and Ghilas complement each other very well. The American is powerful, tall and muscular, while the smaller Ghilas is waspish and quick-footed. The big man and his little sidekick it works for superheroes and it's a proven combination in English football too.
Everyone in England was impressed with Altidore's debut, even if coming off the bench when your team is taking a battering Bolton dominated much of the play and deserved a point at least is almost a win-win scenario for a striker.
A dedicated Twitter user, Altidore posted his thoughts before and after the game:
What I like most of all about Altidore's debut is how much he obviously enjoyed the experience. That's a very positive sign even professional footballers should be able to have fun. After a frustrating season in Spain, it must be great for Altidore to finally get the chance to do what he's good at, both for his club and his country.
If Brown and Daniel Cousin's working relationship continues to deteriorate (there are rumours that Hull's Gabonese striker has fallen out with his manager), then Altidore has a decent chance to cement a starting place in a team that plays in the toughest league in the world. The player himself who is, let's not forget, still a teenager can only improve in those conditions, while the US national team reaps the benefits too. As the title says, this is one Anglo-American football experiment that might work out just fine.

Altidore and Ghilas = Altidore and Davies ? Almost the same combination of speed and power. That pair looks like they will be a dangerous group to deal with for their premiership foes.Posted 24 Aug 2009 at 01:43 PM by DarthGreedo

Solid write up.
I sometimes think Dempsey doesn't get the credit he deserves for being successful at Fulham - random note.Posted 24 Aug 2009 at 01:56 PM by sdotsom

Right after Jozy comes on and the Hull goalie is taking the goal kick, is that a "USA, USA" chant that I hear or am I just imagining that? Wow, great experience for him. Between he and Davies, the US is looking at having a half decent 1st team pairing next year.Posted 24 Aug 2009 at 04:15 PM by onefineesq

Well done Jozy!!! It's a shame he didn't get a goal. Great pass though. I really hope this works out for the kid. He's truly our ace in the hole, and we need him continuing to log minutes and gain confidence. Looking forward to watching Hull games this season now!!!Posted 24 Aug 2009 at 05:42 PM by Leeterofcola

Yes, they chanted when he came on, and, of course, after the goal.Quote:
Well, those events both happened so quickly that maybe they didn't stop

Shearer was very positive in his appraisal of Jozy on MOTD yesterday. He said he could make the difference of them staying up along with Ghilas. Linaker and Hanson kidded him and asked if Jozy was on Shearer's transfer list and he quickly said 'yes' (laughter) then he said that he wished.Posted 24 Aug 2009 at 07:02 PM by MJ-inBRITAIN
