MLS Newcomers, Week 22: The Sounders Return, Should the Gunners Take Notice?
Posted 21 Aug 2009 at 12:02 AM by Breton Bonnette
The Galaxy prevailed yesterday and Seattle/New England is going on right now but neither have anything to do with Week 22. Zakuani was the star of the week as Seattle dismantled the tough Galaxy defense and regained some momentum.
1. Steve Zakuani (Seattle)
He has tied it up with Chris Pontius as top Rookie of the Year candidate and his play vs. the Galaxy warrants that jump. Although he calmed down a bit in the second half, Zakuani's pace and acceleration troubled the Galaxy's backline. It was Zakuani's third goal of the season and surprisingly, the Sounders first goal in 335 minutes.
2. Eric Brunner (Columbus)
That's now 20 games at home and the Crew can't seem to do anything wrong. What's even more impressive is that the Crew keep winning without the help of Guillermo Barros Schelloto (who came on with only a couple ticks left). Brunner continues to be a huge part of the success, developing into the player that made him one of the bigger prospects during the 2008 preseason.
3. Fredy Montero (Seattle)
With Freddie Ljungberg out, Sounders fans were hoping the other Fredy could deliver in their away clash with Los Angeles. The little Colombian replied with an opportunistic clincher and his 10th goal of the season. Montero was relatively quiet most of the game but given the chance, he pounced.
4. O'Brian White (Toronto FC)
His first professional goal must have been an emotional one. After a season ending injury that put White out for the rest of his last year at UConn, he was forced to watch his stock fall at the draft with nothing he could do about it. Toronto took him at a bargain, nursed him to fitness, and watched as he provided his first strike for the Reds to help beat Eastern Conference foes DC United 2-0. Created his chance and delivered, a nose for goal.
5. Chukwudi Chijindu (Chivas USA)
A beautiful curling ball from Chijindu that found Maykel Galindo was the game-winning assist in a 2-0 Goats win over the pitiful Red Bulls. The Chijindu/Galindo tandem worked well in New York and their production allowed Chivas USA to end their club record scoreless streak.
6. Sam Cronin (Toronto FC)
Cronin was all over the place in Toronto's 2-0 win over DC. On the right, in the middle, box to box. It was an impressive performance for the rookie and - in all honesty - with the nature of his position, Cronin has been oft overlooked this season (Bradley noticed, capping him). Cronin, Frei, and White mixed with Sanyang, Attakora, and Gomez make for an exciting, youthful future for the Reds. It was Cronin's pinpoint cross that gave DeRo the chance to open up the scoring.
7. Michael Lahoud (Chivas USA)
Lahoud has had limited playing time this season but he was able to grab his first professional assist in Chivas USA's win over New York. It was the former Demon Deacon's long, pacy run into the Red Bulls penalty box that opened up the space for him to slot it across to a wide open Eduardo Lillingston. Lahoud took out fellow rookie Chijindu and essentially picked up where he left off.
8. Emmanuel Gomez (Toronto FC)
It was hard to pick between Gomez and the younger Sanyang but Chris Cummins talked up the changes at the backline for the match against DC and they proved worthy. Gomez and Nana Attakora dealt perfectly with DC's potent offense as six rookies took the field for the Toronto and the Reds prevailed. Can they do it again vs. a Chivas USA team that might be back to winning?
9. Leo Gonzalez (Seattle)
He has been thrown right into the starting line-up and from what it looks like, Gonzalez has the chops to strengthen the Sounders left-side. The 28-year old Costa Rican international did well for his second start with the club in MLS play. Likes to get forward and has the pace to contend with some of the faster attacks in the league.
10. Eduardo Lillingston (Chivas USA)
He's a poacher and Michael Lahoud/Gerson Mayen did all the work but you can't ignore the fact Lillingston has 7 goals for the Goats this season. Don't get me wrong, this is definitely a guy you want on your team - any chance he gets, he'll put it away. Just don't expect him to create the chance himself.
New faces: Walter Garcia (DF-New York), Jesus Padilla (FW-Chivas USA), David Habarugira (MF-DC United), Yamith Cuesta (DF-Chivas USA), Fabio da Silva (MF-San Jose), Luis Landin (FW-Houston)
