Not all Brazilians can play football…

Ah, so this is why Maikel plays for Szombathelyi Haladas in Hungary, rather than a club that more than 37 people have heard of. Because not all Brazilians can be amazingly good at football.
Maikel's hilarious miss, which must rank as one the worst pens I've ever seen, happened during Arsenal's pre-season friendly against Haladas earlier this week.
"The Arse" (I wish Kenny Hassan would stop saying "Up the Arse!" all the f**king time. Not funny once, definitely not funny by the 500th time) cantered to a 5-0 win, thanks to two goals each by Eduardo and Nicklas Bendtner (one of my hot fantasy soccer tips for 09/10, btw), plus a second-half penalty by Robin van Persie. If those three forwards can stay fit – ifs don't come much bigger – then Arsenal may just challenge for the title.
**************************
In other Gooner-based news, it looks 99% certain that Kolo Touré is off to Man City for a fee in the region of £14m. He's due to fly back from Arsenal's pre-season tour tomorrow to undergo a medical, which is the only obstacle between the Ivorian and a fat contract that is reportedly worth more than £100,000 a week. (Do City even stoop to paltry contracts of less than six figures now?)
City are starting to resemble one of those big-ass Harvester robots in Terminator Salvation – just scooping up players at will, and from the big four too. Where will it end? With Mark Hughes' sacking in December, that's where.
As for Touré, great defender in his day (2005/06) but since he contracted malaria in Africa, his form has dropped off. He's only 28 but I'm sure Arsenal can cover his departure, hopefully for them with experience rather than raw potential. Anyway, I'm sure the majority of Arsenal fans will thank him for his great service and wish him well – not too well though – at City.

Your finest blog ever, Ollie! ;-)
Don't forget Vela in that strike force. If we go to a 4-3-3 (and this weekend might tell that tale) he should factor on the left in a formidable front line.Posted 29 Jul 2009 at 08:38 AM by DoctorK

I have high hopes for Bendtner, really. With Adebayor gone, I expect him to get at least 15 league goals in 09/10.Quote:Posted 29 Jul 2009 at 08:55 AM by Ollie Irish

It is a sad sight that so many Eastern European clubs have sought to fix the malady of poor soccer by buying a few Brazilans. This is true in Poland, Russia, Romania and Hungary.
But I guess it not any worse than English clubs who think a few Spainards will solve the lack of developing home talent.
This is not isolated to just Europe - as MLS has looked like Ellis Island in their signing of everything foreign. While there are a few gems in the bunch, the majority are just stones that gather moss.
While I'm bashing - who is the last good manager produced by the famous English FA coaching school ?Posted 29 Jul 2009 at 08:55 AM by TheHun

Soooo True. I like Kenny, but that line tweaks me every time. Wenger needs to buy and buy soon. The season is only two weeks away, and I fear that players may become cup-tied if he waits too long. Also, he is going to have to spend a good chunk of his cash on players over the age of 19; the future does look bright, but it always does. It is the present that seems uncertain, and we need some adults to help the kids along...Posted 29 Jul 2009 at 01:53 PM by lvanarsdall

Are you sure he's a brazilian? There is a fault somewhere! It's certainly an italian who took brazilian's nationality.Ah,ah,ah! (I will be lynched by italians fans!). Yes! After Panenka's specialty, we have Meikel's specialty. Should I try it one day! Ah,ah,ah!

I would take a skillless brazilian any day compared to an overated underachieving brit like M. Owen, or David Beckham, or even my favorite the whole english nt team for the last four decades. LOL.Posted 29 Jul 2009 at 06:55 PM by atsegnorts
