Jay on Center Line has the story, I'm sure Soccer Silicon Valley will also have its take pretty soon. But the only thing that could cheer up Earthquake fans after losing Huckerby for another couple of weeks came through - the San Jose City Council has approved land for, among other things, a $60-$70 million stadium.

The sports pages are filled with stories of how formerly rapaciously successful teams ITTET have had to make cuts like Errol Flynn in "Captain Blood." Meanwhile, Seattle's cleaning up, Toronto's cleaning up, Red Bull Park is moving along nicely, and the Galaxy got $10 million to make up for the pain of, among other things, not having a packed Rio Tinto Stadium tonight.

Quote:
"In this economy, it's good to see something moving," said Mayor Chuck Reed. "I'm looking forward to seeing lots of people with hard hats on that site, working hard to support their families."

"This is the perfect time to do this," commented Councilmember Nancy Pyle. "I can see far more reasons for this to be approved than not."

"I think this is a good deal and it’s coming at the right time," added District 1 Councilmember Pete Constant.

Another Councilmember, Nora Campos, expressed hope that the stadium could also be used by the area's WPS side, FC Gold Pride, before giving her support to the proposal.

"This is the culmination of five years of effort," Soccer Silicon Valley president Don Gagliardi told the council. "Soccer is very important all across the globe and it’s very important for the grassroots here in San Jose."
Yeah, I only put the last part in as sugar for SSV. But who'd have thought back in 2005 that the Earthquakes would be a better long-term proposition than, to pick a couple of examples at random, the Sacramento Kings, or General Motors?

Back in what I believe is referred to as "the day," there were some doubts as to whether MLS would survive things like recessions and wars and stuff. Today, people are throwing around terms like "new Great Depression" like streamers at BMO Field, and what's MLS' reaction? Wondering how quickly they can expand.

So when I read about how terrible the attendance is for teams who own and control their own facilities, like Chicago and Dallas? My timbers fail to shiver.

Hell, stuff like this, I'm not even concerned about DC United. Yeah, District area pols have been enormous pains, but so were officials in literally every other MLS market, with the possible exception of Seattle. It wasn't as if San Jose politicians have spent the past decade or so trying to do nice things for MLS, and the Silicon Valley area during the life of MLS has seen both boom and bust before this. This is a new environment, and MLS is quietly moving forward. Which, compared to literally everything else in the entire world, is more impressive than the leaps and bounds MLS allegedly went through during Adumania and Beckhamania.

That's what it looks like, though.

How exactly is it Don Garber's fault that David Beckham wants to play with Kaka, Seedorf, Pato, Inzaghi, and others? Wouldn't you?

I don't know if people truly realize this, but writing a blog is an emotional roller coaster.

Five minutes ago, I had no idea this person existed.

Four minutes ago, the idea of ever reading another word from this person ever again made me want to end my life.

In one minute, I will put him on my ignore list. I'm now giddy with anticipation.

Once I do so, I will feel relief and euphoria.

All the peaks and valleys of the human emotional experience, distilled. Crystallized. Pure.

EDIT: and to top it off, delight and laughter:

Looks like this land is directly adjacent to the airport landing strips. That could make for some interesting views from the stands with a 747 taking off in the background. It'll be interesting to see how loud the air traffic is going to be.

747 can't use SJ Airport because of runway length. However, while there will be some noise, Spartan Stadium was very close to the flight path and you didn't notice too often (except for those games were only a couple hundred showed up). ;-)

I had a shockingly civilized conversation about this on the SJ boards a few months back. And, who'da thunk it, there's some science involved.

Allow me to mangle the fourth hand information I've gleaned:
Apparently, the stadium will be to the West of the runways, which run roughly North/South. So the stadium will not lie in the flight path per se, and thus not be greatly affected by the noise.

Hopefully that's true and apologies if it's not.

No that's true. I've gone over myself to test it out, and despite being pretty close to the airport the noise is minimal since stadium site isn't under any flight path. You'd likely have heard more airplane noise at Spartan Stadium than we'll hear at the new stadium, particularly with the new place having a roof.
