Who the hell is Federico Macheda?

… That's the question everyone is asking today.
Machedo's cameo appearance for Man Utd against Villa yesterday, capped off with a quite dazzling winner in added time, has catapulted him from obscurity to instant stardom. As you'd expect, Sir Alex Ferguson will have none of this nonsense. He'll be intent to "keep the boy's feet on the ground", a tactic that has so far worked for several United prodigies, including Ryan Giggs, David Beckham (although even Fergie couldn't tame Beckham once Posh had got her talons into him), and Wayne Rooney.
Not since Rooney announced himself to the world, with this truly unforgettable , has a teenage talent made such an impact on his debut.
At this point, it's only fair to post a video of Macheda's goal (catch it quick, as I suspect it will be taken down quickly by the ever-vigilant internet police):
It wasn't from as far out as Rooney's screamer, but technically I'd argue it's superior. It's certainly a more valuable goal than Rooney's. What composure from the 17-year-old Italian. Is it me, or doesn't he look more like 23 than 17? A very fast developer, clearly.
Also enjoyable was Sky Sport's Fanzone coverage of the match. From triumph to despair for one Villa fan:
Ha, top-class smugness from that Manc.
It would be ridiculous of course to hype Macheda up too much based on a mere half-hour, but he does appear to be a wonderfully good prospect - he reminds me of a certain Cristiano Ronaldo, in terms of his self-confidence and physical strength. They even look slightly similar. Perhap they both use Dapper Dan? (I'm more of a Fop man.)
Happily, there is more footage of Machedo in action on the web, in the form of a YouTube vid of a recent reserve game between Newcastle and Man Yoo (video spotted at The Spoiler), in which he scored a hat-trick. The Italian's first touch for his third goal is sublime:
Seems like United have uncovered another rough diamond.

The boy is brilliant. Alot of us have been watching his progress in the reserves, and many have suggested he be on the bench at least to offer a different option every once in a while.Posted 06 Apr 2009 at 08:22 AM by sdotsom

He is a great prospect but there is another Italian who is making great strides and that is David Petrucci who was picked up from Roma this summer.Posted 06 Apr 2009 at 08:34 AM by FCDallas96

If he's 17, why does he look like he's 40? Does he have some glandular growth thing? ManChild syndrome? Which means he's as good now as he'll ever be? Which ain't shabby, but still he looks 40.Posted 06 Apr 2009 at 10:16 AM by Wikiality

By "reminds me of a certain Cristiano Ronaldo" are you referring to the giant, blubbering temper tantrum he threw one minute after his introduction as he fell down in the box?
Full credit, though -- that was a sublime piece of skill and finish and a wonderful moment for a 17 year old (hug from the sobbing papa an incredible bit of icing).
I'm just hoping that he's not learning too much from C-Ron. That is, I hope he slicks up with Dapper Dan or Fop -- rather than Flop.Posted 06 Apr 2009 at 11:13 AM by Crimen y Castigo

Yeah. It was a great goal.
I just hope everyone realizes that throwing on Macheda was a desperate move by a desperate manager. It wasn't a master stroke of any kind. Don't give SAF credit for taking a gamble he had to take.
Macheda will be a real easy player to hate. One, he plays for United. Two, like Crimen y Castigo said, reminds me of Crissy in a bad way.Posted 06 Apr 2009 at 12:12 PM by CCSC_STRIKER20
