West Ham United striker, Craig Bellamy, insists a move to Glasgow Celtic would appeal to him but is not an option for the impending transfer window. The Welshman, who played at Celtic on loan from Newcastle United in 2005, maintained that whilst he has admiration for the club they simply could not afford him and his uncompromising wages.

In an interview with Talk Sport, the fiery character acknowledged: “I have been with Celtic and I like Celtic a lot – everybody knows that I had a great time there,” but was quick to diffuse any speculation linking him with a move in January, adding: “But when was the last time Celtic paid £7million for a player?
“When was the last time Celtic went to the wages that I am earning at West Ham?”

He went on to summarise: “I know the chief executive Peter Lawwell very well. I've spoken to him and I know that he would like to have me there and I would like to go there one day. But if we are all being realistic, and living in the real world, it's never going to happen.”
Adding: “I am very happy where I am.”

This real world Bellamy talks about is certainly a greedy one. A club of Celtics magnificent stature and tradition is an honour for any player. Of course, if the move didn’t appeal on the grounds that the Scottish Premier League has slipped into absolute mediocrity and, as a professional footballer, Bellamy feels the need to challenge himself at the highest level, fair enough. To dismiss a move because, living in the real world, he can make more money at West Ham than Celtic is unflattering to his current club and disrespectful to the marvellous history of Glasgow Celtic FC.

Bellamy uses his shirt to show off the size of his bank account, yet, unlike the sponsor, won't be going bust any time soon.

The mouth that is Craig Bellamy, 29, is no stranger to transfers with several moves over the years for various reasons. Starting out with Norwich City, the Cardiff- born striker moved to Coventry City for £6.5 million in 2000 before another £6 million move a season on in 2001 to Newcastle United, where he enjoyed the highlight of his career. His time on Tyneside subsequently ended in 2005 with a fall out with then manager Graeme Souness and an apparent rift with Newcastle legend Alan Shearer. As a result, Bellamy was sent to Celtic on loan where he won the Scottish Cup but lost the SPL to Rangers in a dramatic twist on the last day of the season.

A £5 million move to Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 2005 saw Bellamy recapture his form and attract the attention of Liverpool who he joined the following summer for around £6.5 million. Further bust ups ensued most notably with team- mate John Arne Riise and consequently the Welshman was moved on again joining current club West Ham for roughly £7.5 million in 2007. The dynamic striker is again available for transfer as the West Ham board try to ease some of the Hammers financial problems. Tottenham Hotspur are currently in talks with the player and look set to capture the Wales international.

The figures are there to see, signing on fees alone have seen Bellamy make a fortune. Add wages and sponsorship deals, the man is outrageously wealthy. The injury prone striker comes with controversy on and off the pitch and the reality Bellamy speaks of is that the modern footballer is driven just as much by money than heart and ambition to succeed on the pitch.
