Does Schmid's Exit Mean the Death of a Columbus Repeat?
Posted 10 Dec 2008 at 06:28 PM by Breton Bonnette
You could pretty much tell it was Sigi Schmid’s last game in charge of the Columbus Crew after he expressed his desire to explore other opportunities after MLS Cup weekend. Alejandro Moreno even said that his post-game meeting sounded like a farewell speech. Then the “visit” happened on December 4th when Schmid met with Seattle Sounders FC General Manager Adrian Hanauer and it seemed a done deal – Schmid to Seattle (there’s a rumor out there about a non-compete clause in his contract, purely a rumor though). But it’s all not set in stone yet. What is set in stone, however, is the vacancy in Columbus.
So who comes next in Columbus?
The quick choice is Robert Warzycha. Assistant coach to Sigi Schmid over the past several years, he’s a former Columbus great, loyal Crew man through and through (seven years on the Crew coaching staff), Polish international and he will definitely come at a price much more manageable than what Schmid was asking for. A fan favorite too, something hard to overlook, is Warzycha the closest thing to keeping the status quo in Columbus? He’s one of the best assistants in the league, but with Columbus possibly on the verge of losing the heart of their central defense in Chad Marshall and breakthrough Brad Evans in Seattle, could Columbus just be a flash in the pan?
Queue the Paul Mariner rumors. The long-time Revolution assistant coach has been linked with almost every recent open managerial position in Major League Soccer and this time, with Columbus AND Seattle, it’s no different. He seems like a guy more fit for running the New England ship once Stevie Nicol moves on and – call it a hunch – I feel like that day could be coming. That might say something about the Columbus choice. If Warzycha has been there before Schmid, as a caretaker for 14 games, and during Schmid, he’s probably the best bet at moving the Crew forward. While we’re at it – throw John Spencer in there. He’s another guy that has been linked with every open position in Major League Soccer, but it’s hard to believe Hunt would pick an out-of-house assistant over Warzycha. But to play devil’s advocate, Tommy Soehn hasn’t been the ‘natural progression’ for D.C. United that they were looking for after Piotr Nowak.
So who are the other candidates or is it really only Warzycha in the running? Who wants to take a shot at actually sustaining Columbus Crew success? With their first DP ever, does this mean the Crew are deviating from past actions and trying to move their own direction? If that’s so, we could see a whole new name come into the picture but only time will tell.
featuring Robert Warzycha, former Fire striker Roman Kosecki and all the greats from Holland - Van Basten, Rijkaard, Bergkamp. The commentators steal the show though.

Robert is THE choice in Columbus, I doubt anyone else will really be considered.
Losing Marshall will be more of a hit than losing Sigi. Evans wasn't even a starter until Moffat got hurt (though he performed well).
Though most teams figure to lose someone, especially defenders: Houston (Boswell), Chicago (Conde, Soumare), New England (Parkhurst), Chivas (Bornstein), Columbus (Marshall).
That's the top half of the league, right there.Posted 10 Dec 2008 at 08:46 PM by TrueCrew

Do you queue rumors or cue rumors?
I always thought it was the latter.Posted 11 Dec 2008 at 08:52 AM by Dave Brull

Another interesting choice might be Brian Bliss. He's now a suit in Columbus, but he used to be in the exact same spot that Warzycha and Mariner are in - namely on the short list for every open top job.Posted 11 Dec 2008 at 09:02 AM by AndyMead

Isn't "RBNY defenders" an oxymoron??Posted 11 Dec 2008 at 02:26 PM by kgilbert78

You queue the rumors if you are British, you cue them if you are American ;-)
Anyway, this talk of Columbus repeating or not is insane regardless of whether Warzycha is the next coach or not. Many of you have forgotten the curse of the Supporter's Shield. The curse dictates that since the Crew won the SS this year, they are now doomed to tank next season. Of course they did win MLS Cup this year as well and there have been repeat MLS Cup winners (see Houston), but i am of the mind that the curse of the SS takes precedence in this situation.Posted 11 Dec 2008 at 05:31 PM by tigersoccer2005
